Memphis 9/7/2009) The H1N1 virus took the life of a 13-year-old White Station Middle School Student Monday.
The Shelby County Health Department hasn't released the name of this child yet. He was admitted to the hospital last week.
"We all miss him and love him," said Alexis Kelley.
She has fond memories of the 8th grader who died.
"He was just so nice, he would hang up my backpack for me because I couldn't reach my locker, and he was always like let me reach it for you," she said.
Kelley describes the teen as a popular student and a talented football player.

As always here on FR, Prayrers Up for the family and those that knew the boy. May he be with the Lord now.
Was this a perfectly healthy kid or did he have an underlying medical condition that contributed?
Only about 35K more deaths to get close to the normal flu season.
apparently it is still being investigated as to whether he had some underlying medical condition
That is the question I would ask. Not much info.
Less than a 4 hour drive from us...getting too close for comfort. (as a mom of 2 young teens.)
Poor kid. Wonder if he any other conditions that made this bout of flu more deadly.
Prayers for his family.
This “epidemic” just doesn’t make any sense.
very sad when someone so young goes.. apparently he was healthy enough to be playing football..
I know some football players who have very bad seasonal allergies that has led to pneumonia in the past at this time of year. I’m not saying this is the case here. If our oldest son hadn’t already had this flu in March, then I would be concerned about him. He always has allergy troubles in the Fall in our current location. When we lived in VA, Spring was the bad time of year for him.
Cytokine storm perhaps?
>>apparently he was healthy enough to be playing football..<<
Pitifully, there are many kids who don’t know about underlying heart conditions until they play football, it seems.
Half the kids on my son’s football team have asthma. Apparently, asthma increases the risk for death from swine flu.
Some of the kids on my son’s football team are obese. Not sure if obesity increases risk, though.
If that is true...this could be an indicator that the virus has morphed into a more deadly strain......
Without further data, we won’t know unless more deaths occur...
-or- this could just be one unlucky kid whose body responded improperly to a mild virus.....
It says he was football player and they generally are in good health.
Aspirin was credited with many saved lives during the 1918 Spanish flu, it might make a come back again for this flu season if antivirals run low(HINI is said to be related to the Spanish flu). It has neat anti-inflammatory properties,(read immune system modifiers/cytokine storm quellers)and is a potent anti-pyretic. Screw that Motrin crap! (But do take any steroids if prescribed) Reyes syndrome can occur in very small per centages for kids under 12 but in my mind worth the risk other wise.
My Brother-in-law lives in Bartlett. He is not in the best of health either.
