Among millions of jobless, a few entrepreneurs (8 state government business ownership program)

PORTLAND, Ore. - Until this summer, salesman Jorge Ocampo had always been what he calls a W-2 man. Proof was the Mercedes he bought with cash. But he had always longed to be his own boss.

"Almost every day I thought of it," the 54-year-old said.

The opportunity came June 2 when he was laid off from a high-tech company. Unlike the millions of people drawing an unemployment check, he enrolled in a little-known program approved by Congress that gives the jobless the weekly cash benefit but also trains them to run their own business.

And the newly minted small-business owner gets to keep the profits, too.

The program is available in only eight states, mostly along the coasts.(continued)

Sounds like a good idea, since businesses typically employ other workers. Wonder why there's so few interested (at least according to the reporter)? I'd sign up tommorrow.

Thanks for posting this article.
I am losing my job 11-6-09, also coming out of a high tech company.
All I can think about is starting my own business.
You have provided valuable information here.
Thank you very much.

Also try the Small Business Administration (SBA) if your state isn’t covered by this. Good luck!

As this is an article about Democrats and a Democrat program the fact that the person gets to keep the profits IS news!!

Government rapes small business. Too few are willing to do what it takes, regarding government hurdles, to bother.

My sympathies for you.

I am in a not so great paying, sort of tech. company which on the whole could be a lot worse. For the past several years I have been very interested in starting my own business too. I have a few obligations that will keep me where I am for at least another year but I am making some plans and doing some side work in where I want to go.

Maybe this government program is different somehow, but I can remember the terrible experience I had with the SBA when my wife and I were struggling to get our fledgling little sheet metal business off the ground a dozen years ago.

We had already been somehow making it go right on a wing and a prayer for about a year, when my dad suggested that I ask for help from the gubmint (he's a big believer in Uncle Sugar).

Well, I probably wasted a week's production time chasing a series of dead ends and labrynthine gov't channels that led nowhere. In the end, I threw up my hands in disgust and walked away.

My wife and I toughed it out and built that little business into a success without the slightest help from anyone, through sheer hard work and determination.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't have taken the aid if it were offered, but I sure never went looking for help from the gov't after that experience.

Today, we're in much the same boat as we were then. We're struggling to get another new business off the ground, and so far it's been nothing but hard work and persistence that's kept the doors open.

"It is possible that people may see a bigger risk to start a business in this economy."

Wrong. We've had big and smaller recessions before and niche businesses find opportunity and start up... that's capitalism at its best, finding a need and filling it. The big risk today is not "this economy", but rather this political climate. That is, a climate in which one party, the democrat->socialist->communist party, controls most power channels, and is in progress of dismantling "capitalism at its best", firing CEO's, nationalizing wide swaths of our vibrant and productive society, and czaring, regulating, and overtaxing the remainder.

I’m losing my job 11-30-09 at the latest, a child to support, so far no response on job applications and scared to death. I have an entrepreneurial spirit and would love to take advantage of this program, which is offered in my state. But I’m struggling to think of a service that people really need in a recessionary/depression economy. Should be some kind of medical support service, though I’m not licensed as any kind of health-care provider. < think think think>

Take mental inventory of the skills you possess that are “portable” from one sector to the next. That makes it somewhat clearer, when you try to “bridge” yourself out of the one, and into the other.

Marketing skills, computer skills, people skills ... these are all useful no matter where you want to be. Even highly industry-specific skills can be “repurposed,” by looking at the usefulness of any particular aspect of it, within another area.

This is especially beneficial when writing a resumé, and you should be using one that is tailored to the job opening.

I used to get a magazine (now defunct) called Millionaire Blueprints (Think Entrepreneur + Success Magazine + Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous) and one month they profiled a gentleman in Louisiana who ran a medical collection agency exclusively for Air Ambulance Services. He was raking in about $75 million a year as I recall and had less than 100 employees. Made so much he bought an arena football sports franchise. There are many niches out there. He abandonded regular ambulance collections to specialize only in the helicopter/fixed wing services.

Good luck to you. Our subsidiary is also facing layoffs and they (workers I spoke with) are already talking about making their own company. They learned from the mistakes of the company and know how NOT to make them a 2nd time.
