WASHINGTON (CNN) Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."
The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

What does STFU stand for?
Nice citation, but totally worthless.
Most of us have realized already that that last part means whatever the "progressives" in and around the White house want it to mean.
And there seems to be no one around (at least in government) to challenge them.
Congress and the courts are supposed to be the checks and balance in our system of government. Good luck with that. No one, up to now, ever imagined that we would come to this.
Laura is naive. Does ANYONE think for a moment that there won’t be more school speeches to come, with evermore emphasis on the inspirational life of Dear Leader? He is not seeking change, he is embarking on nothing short of a national transformation under a cult of personality.
Something no one should say to a former first lady!
“Shut the F*** Up”
Keep the pollyanna glasses on. Reality sucks, I know.
Regardless of your assertion. Those conventions are deader than a doornail, and the sooner we start responding to reality, the sooner the usurpers will be stopped, or at least slowed down.
That would be “Shut the F@#k up, Laura”.
No, she didn’t have to say a damned thing! I am tired of apologizing for wishy washy go along to get along crap! Obama is a threat to the bedrock principles of this nation, and any so called republican or conservative who responds inappropriately to the threat is no friend of ours! The Bush’s may want to circulate socially with the enemy but I won’t!
This place is slipping.
She came out running her stupid mouth affirming Sotomayor too, carefully timed like this.
She also accused the opponents of Harriet Myers of being sexist.
I don’t respect this woman.
I read the speech too and felt incensed. And I understand this speech was toned down!
Who the heck is this guy to preach to my sons the value of anything? That’s my job. It’s my job to teach my children why they need to get an education; it’s my job to teach them why they need to stay in school and why they need to arm themselves with knowledge. This is not the President’s job. My children do not belong to the Government.
Someone needs to check into Jazmin Perez and see if she’s even a legal citizen.
Because they don't agree with you?
I suppose you think it's absolutely uncool to wear white after today, too.
Perhaps, just maybe, some people have a deeper insight into the workings of historical politics, and how the clueless traditionalist behaviorists always lose.
>>She says it because she has to.<<
that’s the excuse freepers made when she affirmed sotomayor right before the vote.
she does not have to open her yap. it is not her “duty”
btw why isn’t her husband speaking up in the CIA interrogation lynching? Why is he silent while his guys are being hung out to dry?
Oh the bushes are sooooo classy and soooooo respectable.
The generation he is talking to has the least reason to respect him; he's heaped upon them an unpayable avalanche of debt.
“And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have.”
vs.
What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country.
and make our nation more fair and more free.
and boost our economy
We need every single one of you
youre quitting on your country
you give up on your country
who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best
say about what all of you did for this country?
So dont let us down dont let your family or your country
Big difference than encouraging them to pursue their dreams?
No, it’s not slipping, it’s waking up. Waking up to the fact that all the phony niceties tossed around by people such as the Bushes aren’t worth a diddly when the other side is playing for keeps. Bush and his darling wife spent 8 years playing nice, while the left made huge advances taking advantage of their naivete. The first Bush absolutely blew the foundation established by Reagan, a foundation that even a mediocre politician should have been able to maintain and extend. And then the second Bush absolutely blew the greatest single piece of political capital ever handed to a President, the 9-11 attack. He could have closed our borders, thus returning us to law and order, could have tightened the screws on all the left’s activities related to our economy (such as the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle) because of their impact on our national security. But no, he didn’t want to ruffle any feathers, likely influenced by his darling wife.
Sorry, but when the other side is shooting at you, you don’t play nice.
Was Laura asked her opinion, or did she volunteer it?
You caught that, too.
1. I don't believe a word of it much less that he got up at 4:30 to do lessons. I'm surprised he didn't say he walked to school, 4 miles, up hill both ways in the snow in his bare feet.
2. And what's this about his father leaving the family when he was two? That's a lie. Evidence shows his parents didn't live together so how could he have left them? Ann was in Seattle days after the birth and didn't go back to Hawaii until after Senior left for Harvard on June 22, 1962.
3. He says he was raised by a single mom. No, his grandparents raised him.
4. He says his mom was single. Someone is lying. Michelle says Ann was "very much single" but Hussein says Ann and Senior were maybe sort of maybe married on Maui but she did file for divorce in '64. In '67 when he was 6, she married Soetoro.
5. He missed having a father. The Soetoros were married for eight years but of course he wasn't with them all that time because Ann dumped him back on the grandparents in '72. For most of his life he had a father figure in his grandfather which is much more than the kids he claims to identify with.
She wants us to respect a Marxist with terrorist connections who hired a known racist and communist to an unconstitutional czar position.
And she speaks against parents who might have a problem with that.
What an elitist, out of touch nitwit.
