Obama: Public option should be part of reform
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obamainsisted Monday "the time is now" for healthcare reform as he geared up for a major address to Congress this week aimed at getting his top domestic policy priority back on track.
Taking his case for a healthcare overhaul to America's economically hard-hit heartland, Obama sought to seize back the initiative on the divisive issue after losing ground to critics during a turbulent summer.
"It's time to do what's right for America's working families, to put aside the partisanship, to come together as a nation, to pass health insurance reform now -- this year," Obama told a wildly cheering crowd at a Labor Day picnic held by the AFL-CIO union coalition in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tort reform should be part of health care reform. Public option, not so much.
Nope.
The only real reform would be Obama tendering his resignation immediately.
I wonder if Conservatives ever opted out of using MSNBC (Massively Silly Nonsense Broadcast Constantly) as a “news” sources, if they would fall even lower in the ratings then they the ratings basement they currently live in.
I pray he stays with this PO...that they ram it through...this will bring him down and we will undo it after he is gone...
You want more "competition" obama? Then instead of putting the federal govt. into the mix and distorting the market, how about these simple ideas:
Allow companies to compete across state lines, allow individuals to shop across state lines. Instant free market competition. Oh, that's right "free market" is a four-letter word to socialists.
End the tax penalty for private insurance. Allow individuals to pay for their healthcare coverage with pre-tax dollars the same way employees who get coverage through their employers do. Oh, wait, this would reduce your budget of "other people's money" to buy votes with, that's why obama is against it.
As others have noted, tort reform. Not only would this reduce malpractice insurance premiums, it would also reduce "defensive medicine." With real tort reform and some sanity in the legal system, Doctors would no longer order every remotely useful test and procedure just to thoroughly cover their backsides or their hospital's backside. Oh, wait, the democrats count on the trial lawyers for a lot of support, guess this one's a non-starter too.
Public Option is just a barganing chip that is really irrelevant to the real issue of government health care!
Dems are saying “health care reform” as a cover for their only option which is socialized medicine, not reform!!
They are snakes!!!
It’s all the same-old same-old. For some one who claims to be for the people, he seems to easily dismiss the people. He acts as if the town hall protests never occurred. I was willing to give his speach on Wed. a chance, but he seems married to the same old talking points. He should fire ALL of his advisors, they will destroy him. For some one who began his presidency so “in touch” he has fallen “out of touch” very quickly. It’s too bad he has surrounded himself with “yes men”, he could really use a dose of reality. I really wanted to give him a chance :(
What part of “no” can’t he understand... He is NOT the King of this land. The CONSTITUTION and the PEOPLE govern HIS decisions, not the other way around. Truth be told there was no “majority” to his victory, that’s just propaganda & image control. Many people are (rightfully) VERY angry about the proposals in Obamacare. It’s not just Republicans, or “Right-Wingers”, it’s real people who usually just read the news getting out there and saying it loud and clear, and in person now... It’s made a HUGE impact, IMHO.
And Obama fans the flames of discontent once again... The Obama as Joker depiction (no matter where it came from) it dead on, really. As they said in the movie, “Some people just like to watch the world burn”.
“The only real reform would be Obama tendering his resignation immediately.”
Ditto!
I actually agree with you. It would be far better for them to ram this through, then we see the resulting public outcry and revolt.. they lose congress in 2010 and the Presidency in 2012.
what scares me far more is an incremental change in the healthcare system, which is what we have seen from the socialists and statists, since FDR.
hope he goes “all-in”.... he loses by doing that.
Despite their current slump in public opinion polls, don't ever underestimate the Baraqqi coalition. With 97% of the votes of a significant part of the electorate, they have a better head start on 2012 than we might think.
Notice that every time the MSM writes about him speaking some where it is always to a “wildly cheering” crowd. The never just cheer or clap, they “wildly cheer”. What BS.
Very observant and so true.
This latest ploy won’t work. All he is doing is putting an exclamation point on what lost over the summer. If anything, it will chase away some leaners.
