Superintendent Says He's Ordered Students To Watch Address

NEW ORLEANS -- Orleans Parish School Board Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said Friday he's ordering teachers, staff and students to watch President Obama's address designated for schools on Sep. 8.

The directive impacts students and staff at four Orleans parish schools. And the Superintendent said he's encouraging charter schools within the district to allow students to watch President's address.

“Not only will the President’s speech address civic engagement and personal responsibility, both pillars of Louisiana education goals, it will also allow our students to participate in interdisciplinary lessons and discussions,” Kilbert said.

The President's planned speech has raised some concern for students and parents who worry the speech will be used for political purposes. But Kilbert said he believes the President will delivered a focused speech aimed at preventing kids from dropping out of school.

Kilbert said teachers will be encouraged to include themes from the President's speech during their classes.

He's got no authority to request that. Talk about someone who is used to abusing his power!

It’s New Orleans. Even now, how much of an order do they really have to make it?

I started to scan some of the comments at the link to the article and noticed the same thing I’ve seen wherever I read articles about the president at any news outlet. No matter WHAT the topic is- if you disagree with Obama- you’re a racist. I’m beginning to think most of these people believe it.

The Gwinnett County, GA schools are doing the same thing.

My kids are going to be sick that day
_____

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has sent a letter to principals announcing that President Obama would be making a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will call on students, parents, and educators to share a commitment to ensure every child in every school gets the best education possible.
Gwinnett County Public Schools will allow as many students as possible to see the broadcast which will air Tuesday, Sept. 8 at noon. The President is scheduled to speak for 15 to 20 minutes. The speech coincides with the first day of school for many school districts across America. For other systems, however, like Gwinnett, the school year is underway and the schedule may present challenges for schools because of activities and events already scheduled to take place.
Gwinnett County Public Schools will air the President’s address live on GCPS-TV. However, we also will offer schools other viewing options if the live address interferes with already planned events at the school or in individual classrooms. Schools have the option of either accessing this at a time other than the live broadcast via the GCPS-TV video on-demand web site or recording it to share with students at a later time.
If any parent does not want his/her child to view the broadcast, the local school and teachers will make accommodations to honor the parent’s wishes. Schools will develop local processes for handling these requests.
Classroom activities related to the President’s speech have been provided on the U.S. Department of Education web site.

Is the race of the superintendent known?

If he be A-A that may be behind the order.

Gee, I remember how we behaved in school when we were made to attend some assembly with a speaker or a film. The teachers spent all their time keeping order and the snickers down to a dull roar.

We used to bring in parts to an appropriately masked lens flashlight to assemble and flash the Bat Signal on the walls. Then dis-assemble.

Keep them home.

And go to the next school board meeting and raise H.

Get him fired.

"rleans Parish School Board Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said Friday he's ordering teachers, staff and students to watch President Obama's address designated for schools on Sep. 8."

What a joke. Just goes to show how these glorified school teachers think they are so high and mighty.

He can't "order" anyone's kids to do squat.

If I were a parent in that parish, I'd order my kid to stay home. I'd also order a pizza send to his house just to show him what authority of "order" he has.
