What is wrong with giving our children a sense that we are united, that we operate as one country and that we have a leader who wants to talk to them?
During my lifetime, I have heard complaints from folks on the right that I am not patriotic because I protested the Vietnam war, questioned both Presidents Bush on the wars in Iraq and wondered if we are ruining our standing as a moral country with our renditions and interrogation methods.
I am not a big supporter of the most of the Republican presidents that have served during my lifetime but I support our democracy.
Having commuted to Dubai from the United States most of the last year I see how having one inherited ruler and the lack of any real "buy-in" from the populace can wreck a country. We have one president and that president is elected by the people. The majority speaks even if almost half of the country doesn't like the choice. The president is our leader for four years. We are a UNITED states. For all these reasons, the reaction that we have seen in the past few days to the announcement that President Obama intends to address school children is quite shocking.
In the '50s and early '60s when the president of the United States had something big to say or there was an event such as the first manned space launch we all gathered in the gym and watched the event together on a black and white television. No one thought it was propaganda, no one thought it was Democratic or Republican, it was American.

Ellen Ratner???? WTH??
Foxnews printed this shat?
Obama has been forced to tone down this speech so much because of the negative publicity, it has now morphed into a much less political presentation. But it is not advisable to open up the door to this kind of politicking in the future, even if this effort turns into a mostly positive message.
‘Ratner? How appropriate.
Well it's like this Ellen. "Senses" aren't worth a ****. Americans want their children TO KNOW that we are united and operate as one country. Having "the children" just "sense" it is pulling the wool over their eyes.
Why?
We can hardly avoid seeing Obama on TV. The man is massively over-exposed, on 24-7, non-stop!
Yes, it is OK for a President to actually, physically visit a school, but this?
This is the action of a Narcissist!
Why isn’t anyone talking about the propriety of Obama asking for personal allegiance and the idea that Americans are supposed to serve him?
Hey, Ellen.
Think about that satement real hard for a minute.
Huh? Like she did with past presidents?
Ellen, maybe the problem is YOU.
Oh Ellen, you partisan twit.
It was Teddy Roosevelt who noted that the Presidency is a “Bully Pulpit.”
It took later presidents, and none more than Obama, to show the Bully Pulpit can be abused.
Yes, it is sad that the President can not be trusted to speak to our children or anyone else without an agenda in mind. But Ellen, you partisan twit, you reached that conclusion for the previous President. Allow us the same courtesy with this one, alhtough I don’t expect you to admit the current suspicion is also more necessary.
Change obama to Bush, back date this 5 years and see what liberal name is at the end.
I dare anyone.
We have the worst, most corrupt administration EVER and we are getting this whiny “you have to support him.”
I’ll support him by dropping a quarter into his cup when he is in the street and out of my White House.
Well, it's a lie, for starters. The president will self-righteously demonize anybody who doesn't become "united" with his bizarre vision of America, thereby pressuring the impressionable young minds to fall into line.
Hear, hear!
A principle that the demorats lived up to during President Bush's’ tenure. I guess she wants us to sing Kumbaya with the leftist.
Poor, poor Ellen. She doesn't see the difference between watching a space launch and completing the President's lesson plan.
