Despite protests, the city of Homestead said they won't ban the controversial symbol
Over a century later, the Confederacy seems to have won. It's a small battle, of course, but it looks like Homestead's Veteran's Day Parade will happen, and, despite protests by the NAACP, organizers decided they could not ban the displaying of the Confederate flag, according to the Miami Herald.
The controversy over the flag began last November, when black residents became outraged that the city allowed the symbol to fly during Veterans Day events.
"I think the Confederate soldiers have always been in the parade. I've seen them there," Chamber of Commerce chairman Jerome Williams told the South Florida Times back in April. "So, why is it an issue this time? I understand the debate, but I've done my own research and realize there were many black people in the Confederacy."
Tensions further flared when the Human Relations Board, who supported the ban, was dismantled by the city - which is not involved in planning the parade -- insisting that it was because of the desire to take it in a different direction, not because of the flag controversy.
A couple months later, the military affairs committee considered canceling the parade altogether, but ultimately decided to go ahead with the festivities, though, according to military affairs chairman Jeffrey Wander, there's a simple solution to saving the drama.
"We can't take a position on this," Wander told the Miami Herald, "but we hope the Sons of Confederate Veterans don't bring the battle flag.'' That scenario doesn't seem likely, though.
``It's hard to march in a parade without our flag," said Gregory Kalof, commander of the Miami chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. "It's like going to a rodeo without a horse."
The NAACP did not return calls yesterday for comment.
Dixie Ping!

Lamh Foistenach Abu!
Isn't that what these jerks always tell us when it comes to something they do that we don't like?
I’m going to buy me one. It’s part of AMERICAN HISTORY whether the ObamaComs like it or not. I want my history back. This crap history the morons of the left are pimping is nothing but a bunch of cheap Bovine Scatology.
Well, well, well! Maybe the prejudice against the Rebel Battle Flag is subsiding.

I wonder if they will tell the faggots not to bring their rainbow gay pride flag to the St. Patricks Day parade year.
With the resurgence of states’ rights, it’s about time that constitutional conservatives rescue the confederate symbol of federalism from the ash bin of revisionist history.
Coming from a family who lost 13 sons in the Civil War I applaud this action. The Confederate Flag was never a symbol of racism until the the 50s and 60s, when true racists started using it for their own ends.
The role of African-Americans in the Confederacy needs to be highlighted more to let Blacks know the Confederate Flag is their flag too (at least southern blacks).
Suggestion: We find a Confederate Black Hero who was recognized by the troops and offices for bravery and write a children’s Book about him and his deeds. There were many, if I recall, but find one man and give a face and name to Black Rebels and why they fought. Maybe a man who was free, not a slave, who joined on his own to defend his homeland. Is there such a person out there we can highlight? I believe there was one who was buried with a Confederate Tombstone who became a Baptist Preacher after the war and a leader of his community. Then, decorate his grave with a Southern Cross Flag and defy Yankee NAACP to remove it from this mans grave.
Introduce them to H.K. Edgerton. He marched as a Confederate Soldier in our Town's last Christmas parade, then gave a speech on black Confederate history.
It was incredible! We took my 15 year old niece, and she said that she learned more civil war history in 30 minutes from H.K. than she had in her entire time in school.
That is a good idea. Does the book need to be written by a black?
It would be better if a Black Man wrote it—but it really wouldn’t be the important thing. It would show a black Rebel hero—and that’s what’s important—to give a face and a name to these unsung heros of the south.
Maybe HK Edgerton could write the book or at least do the introduction to the book. Do we have a name for a black hero?
