President Obama is now scheduled to address a joint session of Congress during prime-time on September 9. Exactly when hasnt been set, but its likely to be 9pm Eastern (although the last Obama prime-time address/press conference was quickly rescheduled from 9pm to 8pm after some of the broadcasters balked, and Fox Broadcasting didnt carry the address, but Fox News did).
But the fall premieres of Foxs So You Think You Can Dance and Glee are both currently scheduled for September 9. Whether the address is at 8pm or 9pm, it completely screws up Foxs night since those shows are scheduled for synergy.
For that reason, and the fact that Fox Broadcasting declined to carry the last address, Id expect them to decline this time as well. The CW has the season premiere of Americas Next Top Model, but they never carry news conferences, so they will benefit regardless.
Since the address will likely happen at 9pm, Id expect Glee, and to a lesser extent Americas Next Top Model to benefit in the ratings. Primarily because if NBC carries the address (which Id expect them to), theyll have to move the 9pm results episode of Americas Got Talent to either 8pm or 10pm, getting it out of Glees way. (if the address is at 8pm, So You Think You Can Dance will be the beneficiary, but much less so, since it would only have faced a repeat AGT). Americas Next Top Model is going to face the new AGT for an hour either way, so its boost would likely be much less.
Funny how obama is taking over an hour of primetime TV every month, just like a Freeper with connections to TV news predicted in January.
I thought it was an address to joint sessions of Congress, not a simple press conference? If so, Fox will NOT dump it, however much we would all dearly love to see them do so.
What’s the difference between “So you think you can dance” and Obama addressing Congress?
Why doesn’t he just address them then and leave us the hell out of it. Attention hound. woof!
Glee is very entertaining. The coach for the cheerleaders is my favorite character. No way should they reschedule to put ol dim bulb Obama on in its place.
I can see how a lot of people might not want to listen to BO drone on for an hour, when everyone knows damn well most of what he will say will be evasion if not just misleading. The only interesting thing I can see coming from that broadcast will be if he decides to throw himself on his public option sword. In which case I’ll wait for the YouTube videos.
I ran out of my usual stuff to watch on Hulu so gave the Glee pilot a shot. WAY outside my usual. Enjoyed it enough to give a few more episodes of something that doesn’t involve guns and explosions.
Glee is a cute show. Hope it gets a bounce from Obama.
That's probably one of the reasons he's doing it this way. There is nothing he is going to say that needs a joint session of Congress. However, he has seen that the networks are getting more and more reluctant to carry an hour or so of Bambi just rambling on, so his strategists clearly have decided that this is a way to get around that.
The only consolation is that Congress probably won't stand for regular joint sessions, so he'll have to come up with something else for the next monthly take-over of the airwaves.
so they have done the White House “prescription for America” town meeting, various other town meetings, the prime time press conference, and now the prime time joint session of Congress speech is coming up. What other permutations can they come up with?
Maybe he will go to the World Series, throw out the first ball, and make a speech? He went to the All Star game.
