Following widespread concern about President Obama's nationally televised address to schoolchildren, parents and schools are opting to forgo the Sept. 8 speech.
School officials have been asked to take a break from normal educational activities to allow students to view the speech from the president and participate in recommended brainstorming exercises following the broadcast. Obama will give the speech at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va. The speech is scheduled to broadcast live at 12 p.m. EST on C-SPAN and at whitehouse.gov.
But parents across the nation are complaining about the speech taking up valuable classroom instruction time and possibly "indoctrinating" young children.
According to a letter from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, "The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.
"He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens."

JFK asked (all of us)... Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for your country.
OBUMMER asks (of the children)... Ask what you can do to help me.
JO NUVARK asks (of the Lord)... Ask Obummer one last time to answer Your knock on the door of his heart.
I just got confirmation that the county school sin my area WILL NOT be showing the presidential address.
Their philosophy is, if the parents want the kids to watch it, the parents should record it and watch it at home with their kids.
As it should be.....free choice!
Jefferson County, Colorado (largest school district in Colorado): All students missing school on Sept. 8 will be marked EXCUSED.
Excellent !
I have yet to hear back from our superintendent.
This is an outrage!.....How can this hack community organizer try to indoctrinate kids?
Just dub it as a National Education Holiday for education at home. Keeping kids out of school pulls money away from the schools and they ain’t going to like that.
There isn't much time left, I suspect it was planned this way. Millions of people will send their kids off on Tuesday with no knowledge of this, and no chance to ask questions.
National “Try Homeschooling, You’ll like it!” day
I love the smell of resistance in the morning...smells like future vict’ry.

The two biggest districts in San Antonio (NISD and NEISD) will not be showing it either. Both will post the webcast on their websites but not show it live. Makes me proud...

Another backfire with unintended consequences for Bambi - I don’t have a problem with that. Snow day!!
If I have school aged kids, I’d skip work and take my kids fishing.
If I wanted them to watch and listen to traitors, I would either flip to CNN or make them watch the Pelosi Congress on C-Spam.
have kids listen to Rush day.
Rush should do one segment with just kids calling in...
My kid’s school system will not be showing the program.
I sent them a respectful email asking if it would be shown and that I did not approve.
They called me within an hour and said, “No”.
OK, here’s the twist from the educators view.
It was dead wrong for the federal govt to circumvent the chain of command and more importantly the parents. IF the message is short and sweet and does not stray from the importance of education, then I’m good with the message. Keeping your kids home IMO is a mistake, instead prep them for what is about to be done and ask them how they would respond. You will be shocked at how conservative your children are, I know I was. I think that this is good for our conservative kids to see the other side, so they know what they are fighting - you know, the know your enemy thingy.
Our distict does not subscribe for the level of bandwidth required for video streaming - and we are pretty well wired and up to date from a technology stand point.
A friend just e-mailed to say she will keep her son home, if they show it.
