Council gets an earful on G-20 rules (Check out the photo)

Proposed new rules meant to help police handle G-20 protests faced a barrage of verbal rotten eggs yesterday at a Pittsburgh City Council public hearing, and appear to be headed for a close vote.

The hearing was held to get views on rules that would allow police to cite people wearing masks or carrying items from pipes to high-powered rifles if they appear intent on thwarting police dispersal orders. It became an outlet for concern about what some called the pending militarization of Downtown, and what others characterized as the demonization of protest.

"The real message that I'm hearing is that Pittsburgh welcomes the world, except those who choose to dissent and exercise their free-speech rights," said David Meiern, a veteran protester, who then donned a polar bear mask while addressing council.

"Take that off, it's illegal," quipped council President Doug Shields.

"Why am I wearing this polar bear mask, you might ask," Mr. Meiern said. "It may be that I want to commit a crime, or it may be that the ice upon which polar bears are depending is melting as we speak."

Actually, the seasonal ice melt in the arctic is past the minimum for the year.

The high powered rifles are a Constitutionally guaranteed right. I see a problem with the police using the possession of a weapon as grounds for harassment or arrest.

However, the only reason a protester would want to obscure his face during a protest, is that he is intent upon committing a crime and wishes to hide his identity. This would appear to be a pre-planned intent to commit injury, vandalism, theft or arson.

It's not Halloween and he's not under the age of 13.

So, it's free speech "protest" when leftwing moonbats do it, but it's a right wing conspiracy backed by big phamra when it's protest against leftwing moonbat government.

Oh, and Mr. Meiern aka moonbat- The ice is not melting, and the bears are just fine, other than overpopulating their environment. And they eat other things besides seal.

The ice never even completely melted in the Hudson Bay all summer like it normally does. Like everything else global warming related, Polar bears aren't in any danger from anything other than environmentalist kooks who haven't a clue what they are talking about.

Yea, I saw the irony here too.

And what is the left defending? Wearing masks and carrying pipes and clubs to a protests.

If the police will be wearing masks, I don't see why private citizens should be barred from doing the same...

Costumed protests have an American precedent...

The reason police mask their faces, is because the criminals attack them and their families; this is evidence that the Liberal policies have failed - criminals are not scared of the police, they are at war with them. IMHO, the police need to use their weapons more often, when they are fired on - it doesn't matter if the criminal runs out of bullets or surrenders after killing a couple people.... fire on a policeman, expect to wear a toe-tag.

As for the costumes, the illustration given is a costume, not a face mask. If someone knocks on your front door, wearing a mask to hide their identity - do you have reason to suspect that they are planning on committing a crime? Unless it's Oct. 31st; I will answer the door and step back 3 paces with my 9mm loaded, cocked and aimed for a head-shot.

Better be careful you don't shoot a cop.
