The Duggers and Overpopulation
Post Scripts ^ | 9/2/09 | OneVike

The news is out that Jim Bob and Michelle Dugger are having another child, their 19th. Yes you read correctly, 19 children and their oldest son's wife is expecting their first child. Let us all pray that he follows in his parents footsteps, by having as many children and being as prosperous as his parents. I have heard many people ask the question, "Are they keeping up the household without being on the government dole?" The answer to that question would be that they have never received a dime of taxpayer's money. That is not how they operate. In fact the Duggers run a their own ,business which teaches people how to budget and save by buying only what you can afford among other businesses they own and operate. They built their own home themselves, and had it paid for before it was finished. Right about now many liberals are screaming that the world is already overpopulated and this couple are just adding to the problem. Overpopulated? Is it really?

When it comes to having children, most Christians understand that the Lord opens and closes a woman's womb, and it has been that way from the beginning of time. However, mankind has tried to control that which God said is in His control. The first commandment given to man was, “Be fruitful and multiply Gen 1:22”, and He re-iterated that command again after the Flood when he told Noah, “Be fruitful and multiply Gen 9:7”. Try as I may, I have yet to find any passages where God rescinded that command. What He does tell us, is that if we put our faith in Him, He will supply our needs. Something the Duggers have proved time and time again.

Oh, bullcrap. Poor kids? Ever watch the show? Try it sometime. They spend plenty of time, probably ALL of their time, with their children. They are great kids.

Almost all of it, as desert.

It seems he only used Australia for an example of how few people there really is on this planet, not that he thought we should all live there.

Get a grip of your self.

Those kids are whole, wholesome, and holy kids.

My goodness! Do you know these kids that you say they are "holy"?

Do you worship them because they are holy? I hope not.

They may be good kids, but I'd explore what "holy" means if I were you.

Last time I looked most of the poor unloved children in this country belonged to families with less than three children and the parents are on welfare. I think that the Dugger children are loved a lot more than those kids from one parent families living in the inner city communities Obama was a street organizer for.

I don’t worship these kids. THEY worship the Lord and that makes them holy. You seem to have a real problem with large families. These are Christians and they live their lives like that every day. God is looking for holy people. He’s found them in the Duggars.

They spend plenty of time, probably ALL of their time

ALL their time? Does that teach the kids to work a job?

To perform a useful function in the real world?

They put on a show for money.

You fell for it.

Before they became a reality show, TLC, I believe, did two specials on them, a year or so apart. In the second special, Ty Pennington along with Extreme Makeover, including Sears, Home Depot, Huggies, and an assortment of retailers, finished the house, which was barely a frame at the time. Sears gave them their appliances, and Extreme Makeover decorated and furnished it. I remember watching the show, and was pleased.

They no longer need to live frugally, because they are millionares from the show. However, if they have another dozen kids, they can afford it, and the kids seem to be great kids. But, with her age, and that many children, her health and the health of the baby might be jeopardized.

You’re nuts. Mr. Duggar and the boys built their house. I guess in your world construction skills are useless. The oldest son now runs one of their businesses.

Nobody’s on welfare, but times can be tough even so.

Raising six kids was a very difficult and tough endeavor. It was also the most rewarding time in my life. Nothing beats coming home and having 5 or 6 little ones excited and joyful to see their dad home and shower me with their love. Yes, we even home schooled them as well. That time truly were the best years of my life.

There were many times I worked two jobs to keep things on a even keel when an unexpected monetary event happened.

I find it very disturbing that parents today can't even seem to properly raise one child.

I hope the rest learn to function in the real world.

You won't catch them complaining about Muslims having too many children.

“I’m sure they might not need it, but they do have a reality tv show on cable. It’s called 18 Kids and Counting, which they’ll soon have to change to 19 and Counting.”

I know. I occasionally watch it.

My point was they don't NEED to have a Reality Show for $$$ as Jon - Kate + Eight. That show is the income for them. Their ratings are beginning to tank. I believe Jon - Kate + Eight might be discovering that their phony, dysfunctional family isn't selling well.

Get a grip?

Try some mathematics. See how much reliably, permanently arable land the planet has, how much of it is needed per person, and then calculate how sustainable large populations are.

It can be fine and dandy to have a 20+ billion population on this planet, but once we get there, be ready for a couple of billions ending up dead after each seasonal flood or drought.

These people (the Duggers) are very fortunate. Something that is not discussed very much is that male fertility is down in the developed world. A family member has been trying very hard to have children, but her husband simply has a low sperm count, which apparently, according to their doctor, is not unusual among young men now.

But I guess that wouldn’t go along with anti-population hysteria, so it’s better not to discuss it.

Again, these people are really lucky, and I wish my kids had “problems” like that!

“They are not exploiting their children. Get a grip.”

The Duggers are NOT exploiting their children.

You misunderstood me.

Jon - Kate + Eight are exploiting their children solely for $$$$. The Duggers don't need to $$$$$ and are not phony like Jon and Kate ... .

“After the shock and I had their attention, I would explain it is none of your business how many kids I have as long as I don’t take a dime out of your pocket, which I never have, then hand them a quarter and tell them to call someone who care what they think.”

Good answer.

We had eight children. Whenever the busybodies would tut-tut and say “Your wife is pregnant again?”, I would answer, “Well, we’d stop having them, but we don’t know what’s causing it!”

That shut them up real quick!
