Washington, DC -- Justice John Paul Stevens could become the next Supreme Court justice to retire if the speculation that has started today is correct. Stevens has hired just one law clerk for an upcoming Supreme Court session, which observers say is an indication he could be considering a retirement bid.

It is sad, but Obama will get 3 Supreme Court appointments in his first 4 years. Ginsburg will follow next. The Conservatives will lose the huge youth advantage they had.

Oh dear. Prepare for a young, radical Leftist. Obama will go for the gold because time is running out for his one party rule.

The good news is that the strongest likelihood is for those 3 appointments to be new justices replacing leftist ones. The ideological balance on the Supreme Court isn't likely to change much in the next few years.

It's also worth noting that some of these justices may have no desire to stay on the court for the rest of their lives. That Roseanne Barr look-alike that Obama just named might hang around for a while, but who knows what other career aspirations she might have -- especially when it becomes clear that she's an abject mediocrity with nothing to offer?

The 15 or so decent Senators will be powerless to stop the appointment of another affirmative action beneficiary. On the bright side, it’s a leftist for a leftist. But a much younger leftist.

Nope, already hit that wicket. The next one must be transgender.

I think the Constitution should be amended to provide for 18 year terms for SCOTUS. Each presidential term gets 2 nomination, one in each Congress.

That way, the game of nominating young justices who remain until past senility won’t fly. If a justice dies, the sitting President fills the remainder of the term. Nothing prevents a President from nominating a departing or past justice to a new term.

It would make Presidential election a lot less stressful, and the electorate would know exactly who the next president will be replacing.

Lindsay Gramnesty will be the sacrificial “yes” to give the rest cover.

Obama will pick another quota illiterati, this time a “person of liberal color” to counter clarance thomas.

All the more reason to STAY - she'll never match the prestige.

Actually, it is bad news. Liberals were on the ropes, there was no way these three justices would have lasted through another GOP administration. It was completely predictable that these justices would jump as soon as the Democrats got control. Now the court will be locked into another pro-abortion tilt for another 20 years.

I hope conservatives on the court employ food tasters. The one whose possible retirement worries me most is Anthony Kennedy, the usual swing vote. He’s 73 and might be looking for a few years back in California.

Don’t be so sure...I for one am hoping that Obama continues to nominate unhealthy folks who are insulin dependant and battling a weight problem.

That is true, Obama probably could have picked a healthier specimen.

You are right. Sodamachine won’t have a long life, statistically. But, I bet his next choice will be a black liberal, since there is no “real” black man on the court.

obama only has a justice sail thru the process if he is popular. He is not...this next one may be a tough sell given the fear currently gripping congress...

?The ideological balance on the Supreme Court isn't likely to change much in the next few years.

I said the same thing on an earlier thread. But now that I've thought about it a little, I feel differently.

Kennedy is the guy with the power. He's generally centrist and can go either Left or Right. The people Obama picks will be young, feisty, in-you-face activists. If three Liberals replace three Liberals, it does nothing to the ideological balance. BUT if the new Liberals can put the moves on Kennedy and convince him to bend to the Left more often, then we would see a shift.

sotomayor doesn’t look very youthful or healthy (she has diabetes) and ginsburg wasn’t exactly a hot babe when clinton picked her.

When are Asians going to demand a spot on the court? Or will it be Native Americans next? Those of mixed race and/or confused gender? The mind boggles!

We’re just going to have to increase the number of justices on the Court in order to accomodate everyone!
