INSTRUCTIONS: Using the New International Version Bible, answer the following questions. Do not rely on your memory. As the Bible is the final authority, you must take the answer from the Bible verse (not from footnotes but from the text).

1. Fill in the missing words in Matthew 5:44. “Love your enemies, ________ them that curse you, ____ _____ to them that hate you, and pray for them that _______ ________ ________ and persecute you.”

2. According to Matthew 17:21, what two things are required to cast out this type of demon?

3. According to Matthew 18:11, why did Jesus come to earth?

4. According to Matthew 27:2, what was Pilate’s first name?

5. In Matthew 27:35, when the wicked soldiers parted His garments, they were fulfilling the words of the prophet. Copy what the prophet said in Matthew 27:35 from the NIV.

6. In Mark 3:15, Jesus gave the apostles power to cast out demons and to:

7. According to Mark 7:16, what does a man need to be able to hear?

8. According to Luke 7:28, what was John? (teacher, prophet, carpenter, etc.) What is his title or last name?

9. In Luke 9:55, what did the disciples not know?

10. In Luke 9:56, what did the Son of man not come to do? And, what did He come to do?

11. In Luke 22:14, how many apostles were with Jesus?

12. According to Luke 23:38, in what three languages was the superscription written?

13. In Luke 24:42, what did they give Jesus to eat with His fish?

14. John 3:13 is a very important verse, proving the deity of Christ. As Jesus spoke, where was the Son of man?

15. What happened each year as told in John 5:4?

16. In John 7:50, what time of day did Nicodemus come to Jesus?

17. In Acts 8:37, what is the one requirement for baptism?

18. What did Saul ask Jesus in Acts 9:6?

19. Write the name of the man mentioned in Acts 15:34.

20. Study Acts 24:6-8. What would the Jew have done with Paul? What did the chief captain command?

21. Copy Romans 16:24 word for word from the NIV.

22. First Timothy 3:16 is perhaps the greatest verse in the New Testament concerning the deity of Christ. In this verse, who was manifested in the flesh?

23. In the second part of First Peter 4:14, how do [they] speak of Christ? And, what do Christians do?

24. Who are the three Persons of the Trinity in First John 5:7?

25. Revelation 1:11 is another very important verse that proves the deity of Christ. In this verse Jesus said, “I am the A__________ and O___________, the _________ and the _______:”

Since KJ preceded the NIV, I interpret that to mean the KJ is more accurate.

My understanding is that the NIV was translated directly from the Dead Sea scrolls. I'm not putting down the KJV, but I don't think you can base an accuracy claim on the date of the publication.

Not that its my denomination, but I thought the King James Version was the most widely sold Bible.

I consult as many translations as possible.

The most accurate versions are in Hebrew and Greek.

The NIV is not the best selling Bible in the USA, the KJV still is. The counts you are referring to do not cover the not for profit group of publishers, such as Church Publishing, who only sell KJV and sell a lot of them. I love the fact that where NIVs have the publisher name on the spine, such as World publishing; mine has Church. It is always a nice conversation starter.

Amen and Amen. My daughter had a class where they used the NIV and I bought her a side by side KJV/NIV. The teacher started really getting upset with her questions during his teaching. But because of the obvious distortions, I now have a daughter who can rightly divide the Word.

Thank you for the concrete examples. While I have been using the NIV quite a bit, I will be re-thinking my choice based on this post.

“The Bible of choice for conservative Christians is the KJV.”

What bible should conservative Catholic Christians use?

And I suppose your KJV is accurate?

Look. If you open your Bible right now and you ain’t looking at this:

Then I submit to you that your version is just as corrupt.

Round-filing the TNIV is a good thing.

The King James version is a translation of a translation. they used the Latin Vulgate (see: Roman Catholic translations) and put them into (then) contemporary 16th century terminology.

The NIV is a translation from extant Hebrew, Greek, and other prime sources, rather than a third-party translation. I uses modern words and phrasing to express the Bible's view. It is certainly not evil in any way.

Unfortunately, though many cling to the KJV as THE Bible. The NIV is a more accurate rendition of the original texts available.

John 3: 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. - NIV

Is this the version that didn’t like God being refereed to as a man ( because it offended the NOW hags ) and they “corrected” it?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I believe it was.

I’ve followed the Bible translation controversy somewhat closely. “Green’s Literal Translation” & “Young’s Literal Translation” are probably the closest to a literal word for word translation into English. One thing that becomes apparent when you read either of those is how “non-literal” the KJV can be in places (although it is more literal than most modern translations.)

If you want a solid modern, literal translation that uses the same New Testament base texts as the KJV, then go with the NKJV.

As far as modern New Testament text basis, the New American Stadard 95 out of the Lockman Foundation is the best (not the older one, but the 95 version.)

Why ask that of someone who is NOT a Catholic Christian?

If I may be so bold as to answer, though ...

I recommend either the Douay-Rheims/Challoner translation (the original of which predates "king james" by several years) or the Catholic edition of the Revised Standard Version.

See post 21.

Another example:

Mark 1:2-3

KJV
2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

NIV
2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"

3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "

Verse 2 refers to two Old Testament passages (hence, "prophets"); Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3.
