BURBANK, Calif. - Spider-Man and Iron Man have a new boss: The Walt Disney Co.
Disney announced this morning that it is buying Marvel Entertainment -- and the more than 5,000 Marvel characters.
They include X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor.
"This is a great fit for us," Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC this morning. He said the acquisition was a way to attract more boys.
Disney said the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share -- or about $4 billion. Iger said the acquisition will grow both Disney and Marvel.

I’ll bet $5 that Disney will be sending Thor to Anger Managment Class next week.
I swear FReepers are pyschic!
regarding your universal comment.
I wonder if this is some kind of manuver to do a same as.
Remember when Universal opened their park, Disney rushed and opened MGM studioes, now hollywood studios.
Now disney has a “me too” with the marvel heros so it does not matter that universal has spiderman because hollywood studios will have spiderman too. I can see the mass ads now.
Where should a family spend their hard earned money. At one park where the kids only get 1/2 of the menu of characters or at a disney park were all the characters can be found.
Disney is just looking for a generic fit. Also remember disney has essentially ignored boys. It is all princesses and they they throw in pirates as an afterthought.
They have to do SOMETHING to balance out the park or DisneyWorld, and the Disney brand, will turn into a sissified spoiled little girl buy me this daddy buy be that daddy park.
I agree. Fox really messed up Deadpool but Disney will make him sing with teacups.
It was always understood that Northstar was gay from day one...as far as I know he was Marvel's first gay hero. It really was not a big deal back when Alpha Flight first came out.
Is there an echo in here? Read my initial comment :)
It has been tried and it has always failed.
Hence why Marvel was in such a mess under Stan Lee at the end.
Lee even sold his name.
He was trying to push “digital online” comic books lately. He is about 10 years behind the curve on that dead horse.
I used to read Alpha Flight. Which character are you referring to?
This isn’t about buying a comics publisher, it’s about buying their trademarked characters to license as toys, rides, games, and movies.
And Disney Corp’s empire just got a bit larger. Let’s extend copyright another 50 years so they can own all of America’s pop cultural icons.
Stan Lee wrote but didn’t create all of the characters. Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko played bigger roles than just illustrators.
Stan doesn’t own anything with Marvel anymore I believe.
There are already gay superheroes in Marvel unfortunately.
don’t give stan lee any ideas for a new super hero...echopost...
(sorry about that, I should have posted to “all”)
Oh I agree 100%. I think Disney took a wait-and-see attitude and let others run the risk of producing the first batch of Marvel movies in the CGI era.
Now that these films are dead certs for making a profit Disney is happy to take over.
Ping for later
“Soon well have Spiderman / Hannah Montana crossovers.”
Well, there have already been Spiderman/Obama crossovers. How do you go down from there? Even Spidy/Hannah M is up from THAT.
Online comics were a bad investment. Because Stan Lee should know as well as anyone, that the money was to be made selling 4 copies of the same physical comic book to the speculators with inflated cover prices.
There is no resale of a digital online comic. Nothing to hang on the wall or get signed either. Without fandom comics in America would’ve been dead along with Big Little Books.
