BURBANK, Calif. - Spider-Man and Iron Man have a new boss: The Walt Disney Co.

Disney announced this morning that it is buying Marvel Entertainment -- and the more than 5,000 Marvel characters.

They include X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor.

"This is a great fit for us," Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC this morning. He said the acquisition was a way to attract more boys.

Disney said the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share -- or about $4 billion. Iger said the acquisition will grow both Disney and Marvel.

Disney not in the habit of betting on anything but a sure thing.

To move from the general to the specific, this appears to guarantee upheaval at Universal Studios Orlando. Universal has an entire theme park section devoted to Marvel comics and features a Spider-Man ride and Universal's flagship Hulk coaster! It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

And Disneyworld sure could use an update. They should rename “Tomorrowland” to “Yesterdayland.”

Can’t say I fault him - he’s fortunate to have lived long enough to reap the rewards for his incredible (no pun intended) creativity and those long years at the coalface.

Just imagine if Shakespeare, HC Andersen et al were able to collect royalties!

I don’t think Stan really has anything to do with Marvel anymore...does he?

Disney has done well, so far, but it seems to me that they’ve lost their brand image. So far, they’ve managed to deal with that. But I must say that, when I was a boy long ago, I collected both Disney comics and Marvell comics, but I thought of them as two extremely different things.

To get back to the $2 billion, that may be a bridge too far in this collapsing financial situation.

Does this mean we will never ever have to hear from the idiocy of Stan Lee ever ever again?

(I wonder what this does for the rides at islands of adventure over at universal. They were all marvel with the hulk roler coaster, the spiderman ride, the marvel super heroes wandering around...)

Given disney’s penchant for “sure things” perhaps this will start to eliminate the flop factor in their publications.

You’re spot on. Disney would never have hired Steve Ditko, for example, and I’m sure this will cock up whatever creative juices remain in the Marvel universe, except gay friendly themes and lots of tolerance.
Instead of the Fantastic Four fighting the skrulls we’ll get Heather’s two mommies fighting global wa- uh, I mean climate change.

And comic-book enthusiasts the world over have a collective coronary....

Yes, Marvel and Disney are (mostly) respected companies, but I see this as nothing but bad for Marvel.

They’re probably popping champagne corks over at DC.

Isn’t John Lasseter, from Pixar, the head of entertainment now at Disney. He’s pretty solid, and if he puts his stamp on the Marvel franchise, that would be a good thing. Think “The Incredibles.”
