Vancouver man shoots pit bull

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A 78-year-old man with a licensed concealed pistol said he was trapped by two pit bulls he had never seen before, and the only way to survive was to shoot and kill one of dogs.

Albert Gosiak (pronounced like go-shack) said he walked out of his East Vancouver house just for a minute Saturday morning. That's Albert Gosiak outside his Northeast Vancouver home. when he met two pit bulls in his walkway.

Gosiak said the dogs were aggressive and he was trapped. He said he acted in self defense when he shot one of the pit bulls.

"It was just a snap judgment," Gosiak said. "What do I do, fumble around? They were right there ... I gotta do something now, so I pulled out my gun and shot them."

A Clark County Animal Control officer was able to capture the other pit bull. That pit bull, a female, is now at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

Employees there tell KATU News that they believe they have found the dogs' owners. No word as to how the dogs got out, or whether the owners will face such dog-related charges as "running at large" or "vicious behavior."

Animal control officials are investigating the case, and have told KATU that they believe Gosiak indeed was acting in self defense. Consequently, it is unlikely they will charge Gosiak in this case.

Self defense against animals are fairly common uses of firearms.

Loose bad dogs are one of the main reasons I carry.

I see no problem with this - what is their motive in making it news, that guns are evil or pit bulls are evil?

There should be a bounty on pit bulls.

I’m given to understand that a fleeing dog can be a surprisingly hard target to hit - and that many dogs will run away after a single firearm discharge unless otherwise trained.

Having had a little experience in the matter, you are correct. A running side shot offers the best target.

I shot at a dog once running a deer through my tobacco patch. Aimed in front of him and shot the ground. The bullet hit a rock and the rock killed the dog. I just about dropped the gun.

Or at least a law that when owners let their ‘beloved’ animals go loose the owners earn a hard slap upside the head from neighbors and passersby inconvenienced and threatened by these nasty canine creatures.

You hear it in every story and letter to the editor: “Pit bulls are not inherently dangerous...they are sweet animals etc. etc.” Sorry but I haven’t yet met an owner who didn’t buy one for the shock/threat value.

Sadly once the owners realize these snarling bunches of muscle don’t return any love they usually neglect their dogs leading to an even, er, sunnier disposition.

Kudos to this old dude. With him being about the same age as my dear dad, I wonder if he was a combat vet. The story doesn't say.

Maybe he was just a regular guy who had his wits about him, even at age 90.

Nothing like a happy ending.

I know lots of pit bulls and mixes from the dog parks. Most of them are great dogs, but, like any type of dog, there are some with issues.

It's not the breed that makes dogs mean. It's the way they are raised. Unfortunately for the reputation of pit bulls, there are a lot of people who buy them to make them mean.

Good point.

Pit bulls aside I think Airedales are among the most obnoxious of all creatures.

You can't say that any more. My pit was a great dog. The happiest, most intelligent, most playful, fun loving dog I ever had. Very protective of its humans if you were on its property, but nothing ever happened that required her to do more than bark. I think she would have been very aggressive had there been an actual danger.

It's society's fault.

Actually the girl who cuts my hair had a female pit that was alright.

Except it went into the neighbor’s yard and the neighbor shot it, claiming it was a deer. The pit was black and white spotted. ?????

I've always taught my sons when involved in sports to never act surprised when something shockingly good happens.
