This is something of a "Vanity" post but I believe it's something to think about in case .gov tries to pull an end-run on us.

I had the same exact thoughts when I just read about Zero’s Net Bill. We definitely are going to need MANY alternative sources of Patriot news & comminications. Problem is, if they are made “public,” the enemy will try & crush those as well. Seems the time is ripe for a *new & different* kind of “Secret Society.”

" But what if there is no internet? What if the President decides to use his power to turn off private access to the net before the confiscation begins? How will we notify others of what is happening?"

I guess we'll just have to go back to the old local BBS (bulletin board services)we used to use before the internet came to be. There's no reason that every local member of the 'resistance' couldn't be kept informed and up to date using this method, and those on the extreme eges of their local telephone services can connect to others and so on and so on to get info across the nation. slower, yes, but that's basically how the internet began.

Almost all survivalists and disaster planners encourage people to get HAM licenses. There are MANY data systems floating in the air that have nothing to do with terrestrial internet.

Good point there. If the Feds decides it is worth their time, how long would it take for them to figure out our identities?

I was looking for a local tea party group and found several within driving distance.

(One or more of these is having a Glenn Beck debriefing next week which is a great idea by the way.)

We could have our contact info with those local tea party groups - giving full contact info, not just email addresses.

The regional group could be in touch with local groups.

Well, I really think I’m encouraging unnecessary paranoia here, but if you’re really concerned about this, then the phone system (landline and cellular) would be even easier to control as those networks are managed by an even smaller number of entities. (And I’ll miss a bet if the government doesn’t already have similar emergency control capabilities over them). Just think about those Emergency Broadcast System tests you hear on radio and TV...when the “balloon goes up” all forms of broadcasting will go under government control, and I suspect there are provisions to control and allocate telephone resources also. Of course VoIP is just another form of data that is transported via the internet.

The solution? Technology that doesn’t rely on infrastructure (i.e. landlines, satellite links, cell towers, etc), i.e. high frequency (shortwave) radio. Same thing that the military still uses, for the same reason. Licensed Amateur (Ham) Radio is the legal option, bootlegging is the illegal one. Radios capable of nationwide+ coverage are the size of a laptop, cost under $1000 and can operate from 12 volt power sources, for example. Or one could buy time on commercial shortwave stations that have international coverage, although getting the programming to them would be subject to all the same constraints. (Check out “Free Speech Radio WBCQ” for example).

In a doomsday scenario (nuclear war, EMP, superflu, etc) that one way or another renders conventional communications systems inoperable or unavaialble (God forbid that should ever happen) - shortwave radio will be the one means of long-distance communication that will still work.

I figure if they cut the internet, they’ll cut the cell phones too if they can. We should probably look into what they are really capable of. We need to build a freeper ham radio community. How far is the range of Ham radios without using a giant (expensive) antenna?

I’ve always wondered about this possibility. HAM radios require licences and if they’re going to shut down radio and the internet they’ll get individual HAM operators. Perhaps, someone needs to have a plan to set up a VOC (voice of conservatives) shortwave or satellite radio transmitter outside the US (as Levin says-an undisclosed location).
I wonder if they could stop fax transmissions?

BigBob, you beat me to it.

Internet, wired phone, and cell phone infrastructures can be taken down pretty easily. Obviously texting, blackberries go down too.

It’s harder to stop a HAM or CB radio. One would have to jam all frequencies. And they can run on batteries.

I think I’ll go shopping tomorrow.

I wonder what color their shirts will be, brown?

Of course not, Silly.

"Obama Blue."

A phone bank is exactly what needs to be put in place NOW. I mentioned this yesterday on onther post...

"Maybe we should think about setting up an alternative message system - which can be done easier that you may think.

It works on a mathematically infallible principal. It's a phone bank system: Everyone has 10 people on their list to call and pass on information. Each of those 10 - who have 10...etc. By just the 5th round of calling out - 100,000 can be reached - in less than an hour. (do the math).

Now, with several of these banks all over the country - vital information can be gotten out to millions within one hour. Just one phone bank per state could quickly reach millions.

The only way you thwart an enemies plans is to be smarter...and to be prepared to end run their tactics.

Mathematics is the one thing that is unchangeable - it is what it is. (BTW, for a fun math exercise, if a millionaire should ever offer you a wish - any wish - tell them you want 1 penny today, 2 pennies tomorrow, 4 pennies the third day and so on, doubling the money each day for 30 days. That's right. Just 30 days. Get them to sign an agreement before they get a chance to do the math ;o) How much money will you have a the end of the month? Will you be a multimillionaire? Do the math - :o)

The Mormon Church has millions of members around the world. They have this system and if a catastrophe hit, they can reach every member in a very short time -

as to 'throw away phones" - think on that one...It's reported that more people now have cell phones than have land lines now.

Indeed, many ask me why I still have my land line. Two reasons: ONE - I live where we have frequent power outages...the infamous ice storm of '98 left me without power for 19 days. The only link to the outside was my land line.

TWO - if they shut down the net, they can also - and will - pull the plug on cell phones. (An aside: What about the Super Grid that they have all ready to implement? They say it's mainly to save energy by having the ability, with the grid, to control your thermostat. That means they can also shut your power down totally. These people have been working all this out since their little WH puppet was in diapers. They've got their ducks in a row. It's up to us to keep out birdshot handy.)

rGet those phone banks built now - as to ID - each person would only need to know the names and/or numbers to 10 people. Security should lists fall into 'other' hands.

I can't believe we are talking about such things in this country.

But the Communists didn't take over Russia because the Russian peoples mind-set was such...and the Nazi's didn't take over Germany because the German People were of that mindset.

These despots have lived in every country and age since time began. All they need to do, to paraphrase, to take over is for us to do nothing, to not be prepared ahead...we gotta be good Scouts.

TOGETHER WE STAND OR WE FALL APART.

The problem with the cheap supermarket phones is that the minutes have a finite life span. You have to keep feeding them to keep them alive.

Besides, if the Obamaführer decides to shut down the Internet, he will shut down the cell networks too.

Before the Internet was available to the public, bulletin board systems (BBS) were in many cities.

They were great for inter-city communications, had forums, chat, file upload and download, etc. They were run over telephone lines, so their speed was limited to modem speeds.

Considering all the questions about what is going on in Washington, it is worthwhile to think about alternatives.

We all swear that our “line in the sand” is the confiscation of our guns.

What good are our guns if we are forced off our rural land into cities? The control of the RED areas of the electoral map gives our side a considerable advantage and they have known it since 2000 when Gore tried to steal the election, if not before.

There is a program of Rural Cleansing and a war on small farmers that is already underway. The "food safety" bills, the cut-off of irrigation water in Oregon and Central California, the NAIS animal id act where the government transforms your private property into a "premises" that they can enter at will without warrant, the drying up of credit to small farmers, etc. etc. all add up. Small towns are getting shut down too as bank close branches, GM and Chrysler dealerships close, and credit for small businesses disappears.

Obama/Schumer/Waxman want to get those who cling to their guns and religion out of the countryside that controls roads, bridges, rail, and food. They would rather we bought food from China.

Has anybody really considered what would really happen if the entire Internet shut down?

Business would come to a stop. How do businesses interact with suppliers and customers these days? How do banks interact with each other?

Years ago, businesses would maintain leased lines. These days, it's increasingly encrypted connections over the Internet.

I can see the feds deciding that certain web sites will be kicked off from Internet connectivity, but they can't shut down the whole net. So, instead of Doomesday scenarios, consider how we would recreate FR quickly if a federal agency just issues a series of edicts to ISPs to shut off a whole bunch of conservative sites.

Some years ago I worked with a distance-measuring machine called a ‘Tellurometer’ that utilized microwave technology. It was big and cumbersome but it had the added capability of voice communication with the “slave” station. Since then I seem to remember reading on the internet about a way to convert an ordinary kitchen microwave for communications. I didn’t pursue it since the S was nowhere close to the Fan... then! Anybody know anything about such a project? It would provide line-of-sight, narrow beam communications over fairly long distances and everybody has a microwave or two plus there is hardly a house anymore that doesn’t have a microwave “dish” on the roof.
