Some years ago I worked with a distance-measuring machine called a ‘Tellurometer’ that utilized microwave technology. It was big and cumbersome but it had the added capability of voice communication with the “slave” station. Since then I seem to remember reading on the internet about a way to convert an ordinary kitchen microwave for communications. I didn’t pursue it since the S was nowhere close to the Fan... then! Anybody know anything about such a project? It would provide line-of-sight, narrow beam communications over fairly long distances and everybody has a microwave or two plus there is hardly a house anymore that doesn’t have a microwave “dish” on the roof.

Instructions.

1. Defeat the interlock on the microwave door.
2. Learn Morse code.
3. Run extension cord up to roof.
4. Haul microwave up to roof.
5. Point microwave at distant receiver.
6. Turn microwave on.
7. Open and close door to produce Morse dits and dahs.

Not sure how you make a receiver that simple, though.
