Hatch: Kennedy and I Were Like "Fighting Brothers"
CBSNews ^ | 8-28-2009 | Kevin Hechtkopf

At the memorial for Ted Kennedy at the JFK library in Boston, Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, talked about his friendship with the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, comparing their relationship to that of "two fighting brothers" and said that they were like the "odd couple."

"It's a great honor for me to be here today to talk about a man I have so much regard for, so much reverence for -- with whom I've done battle for 33 years… and have enjoyed every minute of it," Hatch said.

Hatch talked about running for office in Utah by saying that he would be running against Ted Kennedy.

"As a Republican coming from Utah, I stated many times on the campaign trail that I planned to come to Washington to fight Ted Kennedy," Hatch said.

"When I came to Washington, I hadn't the slightest idea that I would eventually have a strong working relationship with, and love for the man that I came to fight," Hatch added. "If you have told me that he would have become one of my closest friends in the world I probably would have suggested that you need professional help… But that's exactly what happened."

"I miss fighting in public and joking with him in the background. I miss all the things we could do together," Hatch added, as he told stories of their years in the Senate together.

Hatch concluded his remarks with a poem he wrote to his friend, which you can watch in the video above.

He ended with this: "I will miss my Irish friend. God be with you, until we meet again."

An example that personal hate does not have to accompany strong differences of political principle. Maybe the model of Hatch and Kennedy should be considered a little more and the overheated manner of entertainers such as Olbermann and Beck a little less. Even bitter political foes Thomas Jefferson and John Adams developed a warm relationship. Perhaps this is something that many on both sides of the political divide should take to heart.

Ted Kennedy was a traitor to the United States and tried to sell us out to the Soviets during the Reagan Administration.

That is established fact.

Take that ‘bipartisanship’ crap and shove it.

Kennedy was a traitor to his nation and a traitor to his faith.

He was an avowed socialist, pro-abortionist, anti-freedom, pro-gay-marriage, totalitarian statist.

He was no “brother” of mine.

Hatch was a strong supporter of Ronald Reagan and he still had a a high opinion of Kennedy. I think Hatch has earned his conservative credentials over the years more than either you or I.

I don’t dislike Ted because he was a liberal. I dislike him because he was piece of crap scumbag who got away with murder among other things. It’s a stain on our culture that we continually elect and prop up scumbags as politicians who continually take advantage of us as Teddy did. This isn’t a just a demoncrat problem. We have Pubes who do it too. And I am getting MAD AS HELL about it. Sheeeeet, I just think I popped another blood vessel getting mad over Dead Ted! :P

There is some reality to that. They obviously knew each other personally, being part of one of the most exclusive ‘clubs’ in the world.

It's easy to look past the evil of someone when it is not outwardly visible on a day to day basis. How many neighbors of killers say something like: ‘He was a nice quite guy’.

Amen! I am sick of these people who claim to "fight for us" when all they are really there for is the power, perks, and party time. Why on earth anyone who is genuinely an American would want to "reach across the aisle" to "find common ground" with people like Kennedy, Rangle, Schumer, Pelosi, Reid, et al, is way, way beyond my comprehension....

Hatch is a totally unreliable fool for us, and often, a useful idiot for the left.

Hatch, McCain and any other Republican that gave such glowing platitudes last night, were only making sure that the Dems do the same for them when they die. What hypocrites.

Excuse me? Personally I could care less how good of friends these people are when they walk off their Senate stage. They took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution NOT rip it to shreds. And this lion has made it his life's work to force his world view upon US without ever seeking our permission.

Where I come from we call that being two-faced.

It isnt anything to be proud of.

Glad to see just how seriously you take your job Orin.........were you two dating or is it all theater to you?

Pathetic, the senate has become nothing but Kabuki theater.

This is an example of the problem, not the solution. The Senate is not supposed to be a ‘club’ with life membership.

I find it doubtful that God is with Teddy right now, but not as doubtful that he and Hatch will meet again someday.

Hopefully, though, it will make some people finally realize that party affiliation is meaningless. When it gets right down to it these people are in it for themselves. All the blather about Democrats and Republicans is nothing more than fodder for the masses, most of whom are not paying attention anyway. Watch what the politico's do, not what they say and it all becomes crystal clear....
