Town hall cop: 'This ain't America no more'

"This used to be America," argued a protester outside a health-care town hall meeting in Reston, Va., after a police officer threatened him with arrest for holding up a sign with a picture critical of Barack Obama.

The officer's response?

"It ain't no more, OK?"

A video of the town hall held earlier this week by Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., shows an unnamed protester standing on school grounds carrying a sign that read "Organizing for National Socialist Health Care – The Final Solution" and depicted Barack Obama in the Joker's makeup.

Officer Wesley Cheeks Jr. then told the protester that even though others were holding signs, his sign was unacceptable because of the depiction of Obama.

"But you got this with a picture," Cheeks said, explaining why the protester was being singled out from the others. "That's the difference. This has got a picture on it. That don't have a picture on it.

"Sir, leave the picture down," the officer said. "If you put the picture back up, you'll be charged with trespassing."

As a historian and a student of politics as well, an observer of world movements, and as we head down the road to totalitarianism and (with government and their agents) stomping on legitimate, peaceful, American constitutional rights, I would say--again, just viewing this from overseas--that in the USA things are polarizing very quickly in the country, the two camps (ours is phenomenally bigger) are getting entrenched with a growing, deep chasm, and something has to give. Like the Bridge at Concord, or at Bunker Hill, one wonders where the first shot is going to be that sets off this massive powderkeg just waiting to blow, politically speaking. Anybody have a guess on the timeline of this thing? Videos like this are going to wake up and radicalize a lot of people who otherwise were only interested in playing videogames, watering their front lawns and going down to the parlour for a slice of pizza on Saturday night. So help me god they are going to wish to high heaven they had never started this on the American People, once the can of whoop ass is opened for good.

It will happen just as it has before, at an unlikely place, an unexpected time, involving people not usually associated with aggression or political violence. It will involve an American city populated by basically decent hard working folks who've been pressed hard by the policies of a blind, inept and completely dismissive federal bureaucracy. The Boston massacre revisited in the wake of say, a drunken confrontation during an NFL game. On a quiet Sunday evening at home with our friends and families gathered around the television set, an announcement will come on air. "We interrupt regularly scheduled broadcasting..."
