Muslims help fund Scottish exhibit that encourages defacing of the Bible

The next time some Muslim group claims their religion is being mocked, point them in the direction of this story from Scotland. Note to John Murtha & Dick Durban: Muslims help fund exhibit that encourages defacing of the Bible

Art Show Encourages People to Deface the Bible, Write Obscenities

A publicly funded exhibition is encouraging people to deface the Bible in the name of art - and visitors have responded with abuse and obscenity.

The show includes a video of a woman ripping pages from the Bible and stuffing them into her bra, knickers and mouth.

The open Bible is a central part of 'Made in God's Image,' an exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. By the book is a container of pens and a notice saying: "If you feel you have been excluded from the Bible, please write your way back into it."

The exhibit, Untitled 2009, was proposed by the Metropolitan Community Church, which said that the idea was to reclaim the Bible as a sacred text. But to the horror of many Christians, including the community church, visitors have daubed its pages with comments such as "This is all sexist pish, so disregard it all." A contributor wrote on the first page of Genesis: "I am Bi, Female & Proud. I want no god who is disappointed in this."

The Church of Scotland expressed concern, the Roman Catholic Church called the exhibit infantile, and a Christian lawyers' group said that the exhibition was symptomatic of a broken and lawless society.

The exhibition has been created by the artists Anthony Schrag and David Malone, in association with organizations representing gay Christians and Muslims.

What, pray tell, are those?

secularists hate the bible but have no problem with islam for this reason: they are both opposed to western civilization and the Bible represents western civilization.

I think I’ll buy a Qur’an for my bathroom, if you know what I mean. Its pages deserve nothing better than what I intend for them.

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, but became in their imaginations, and their foolish hearts was darkened.” (Romans 1:21)

First they came for the bible and they defaced it.

Then they came for the Koran and they were chicken to deface it.

Made In God’s Image”
Gallery of Modern Art,
Glasgow

If you’ve come to make a complaint about this exhibition, please write directly to:

The Gallery of Modern Art, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, G1 3AH, Scotland, UK

Before you do so, please note: I am not the artist who made the work that everyone is so upset about.... I am an artist who was commissioned to work in partnership with groups and individuals about Faith and Sexuality. It was part of a larger programme called sh[OUT] which looks at Contemporary Art and Human Rights of the LGBTI community.

Some newsmedia have reported that there is a work: “...inviting people to deface a Bible.” This is simply not true, and is lazy reporting. The work originally put on display was a gesture inviting people to write their names into the margins of the Book as a way to show the marginalization of LGBTI from religion(s) as well as to express their desire to be part of God’s love. It was, in fact, the opposite of an “invitation to deface” but (I paraphrase the artist here): a chance for people to participate in a small act of worship, and for some who do not see a Bible, a chance that they would engage with the Book and perhaps plant some small seeds of Faith.

If you are offended by the actual act of writing into a Bible, may I point out that many priests and vicars, lay-person and the like have often written small notes about certain passages as a way of thinking and praying about specific topics. Perhaps you yourself have underlined a particularly meaningful phrase or verse to remind you of its power and meaning.

If you are offended by what people wrote into the Bible, then, unfortunately, that is outwith the control of the Artist who made the work, outwith the control of the Gallery of Modern Art, and certainly outwith the control of me. The majority of the texts written into the margins were pleasant and respectful. Those who did write obscene words (including, apparently, the news photographers who wanted to make a more saucy story) are the people you should be angry with.

The artist who did make the work has said to the Times newspaper: “The Bible should never be used like that. It was our intention to reclaim it as a sacred text.”

Unfortunately, we don’t know who the people who wrote those offensive things are... so we are receiving the brunt of the vitriol and anger, which is both unfair and irrational (not to mention highly unpleasant).

Art allows us to ask difficult questions about our society and to raise difficult issues to address - if this work has highlighted the importance of the Bible, or indeed other issues, then this is a good thing, although, it has happened in a unpleasant way for everybody involved...What we need to do now is stop blaming innocent people, sending angry and threatening emails to them, and stop accusing people of being disrespectful, when they have not done anything of the sort. All the does is increase the levels of hate in the world, and I personally think we have enough hate already - surely you are rational and intelligent enough to see that.

Most of all, we need to stop judging (leave that to God, for those who believe in him), especially judging before you have had first hand experience the work - I believe that is called prejudice, and is certainly not Christian.

They’ve made it obvious what they plan to do. They intend to crush Christians and Jews under their dirty feet, and make them submit.

Sorry, but Jack Kemp is wrong on this one.

The Muslim Council of Scotland, and prominent local Muslims, as well as official Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist groups in Glasgow all publicly condemned this exhibit and supported those who asked it to be closed down.

The local Muslims in Glasgow were very vocal in their opinion that it was offensive not only to Christians, but to all who follow a faith deeply.

Sorry, but simply dont accept what someone on your side of the Atlantic writes about Britain. If it were all true, I wouldnt spend half my life here correcting half-truths and internet stories (and thats as a Conservative).

I see your point. However, Muslims on this side of the Mediterranean are the mild variety, usually. They don’t hold public executions of women guilty of being raped by their brothers (it’s assumed she did something to provoke it most of the time). They don’t shoot nuns who work as health care workers because of some out-of-context statement by the pope. They don’t do a lot of things that would be considered acts of piety over there. Excuse me if I no longer take with a grain of salt everything that is said about Islam. I wouldn’t want to live in a world controlled by it, which happens to be exactly their aim.
