Groups target GOP on cap-and-trade
Politico ^ | 08/25/09 | Ben Smith

Four independent groups are launching more than $1 million in attack ads Tuesday targeting five House Republicans who voted against energy legislation in June, spokespeople for the groups said.

The ads from the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, MoveOn and Americans United for Change, will target Reps. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.), Denny Rehberg (R- Mont.), Roy Blunt (R- Mo.) and two Virginia Republicans, Frank Wolf and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

The ad casts the members as siding with “big oil and energy interests” and against “the jobs we really need” because they voted against the legislation that would set up a system of trading carbon permits known as “cap-and-trade” and impose a series of other measures aimed at reducing emissions.

The legislation passed despite defections among some Democrats worried about its impact on local coal and other industries. An official at the League of Conservation Voters, Navin Nayak, said the ad is intended to send the message to legislators that there will be a cost to opposing the cap-and-trade bill, and to counter a broad political perception that the main risk is in voting in favor of a bill foes cast as a job killer.

IMHO, this is a HUGE mistake by the leftist. The only reason Cap-in-Trade isn't more unpopular (than it already is), is because many people have no idea what it is. But, when they begin to hear and understand the details, even if given by proponents of the idiotic measure, more people will be against it, rather than for it.

Plus, they've made the mistake of picking on some very well-spoken Republicans in Blunt, McCotter and Cantor. I have a feeling they're going to deeply regret this strategy.

It’s always a divisive tactic with these losers. “Big” this “Big” that. Divide and conquer. Can’t win on the merits of the issues, so it’s always “for the little guy.”

Yeah right.

Agreed. This is a waste of money. It will only help our cause. Cap n trade is popular only amongst a tiny sliver of people consisting largely of committed leftists, federal lobbyists, and wealthy urban liberal elites.

Funny how liberal groups can be called "independent", but conservative groups are always labeled "right-wing".

I predict that these ads will backfire gloriously on Soros, Axelrod, and company.

When looking at everything that is going on with our government, people should, on their own, make a list of every country that has or had, controlled their auto industry, controlled the financial industry, controlled the health industry, controlled the water ways, or any other industry in the country that should be controlled by the people. Then list all the countries that are considered the most free. You may not like what you find out. Hope I made myself clear here.

Given for many this has been a modern ‘Year Without a Summer’, I don’t think many people will be sympathetic to their loony cause.

If I was a Republican targeted, this would be a badge of honor. I would immediately cut an ad thanking these groups for attacking me.

Great, please let the voters know who voted against CapNTax. And should it pass in the Senate please let the voters know who voted for doubling energy costs in the USA. I’m sure the voters will want to know that.

I live in central Ohio. It hasn't been over 90 degrees but three times this year - in total. It was 54 last night. My neighbors (who are lifelong Ohioans in their 70s) tell me that they can't remember a summer this cool, ever - and this is coming off a very cold and snowy winter. If you mention the words "global warming", it's met with a belly laugh.

“Funny how liberal groups can be called ‘independent’, but conservative groups are always labeled ‘right-wing’.”

These groups are more corporatist than liberal. The Sierra Club is funded by the Ford Foundation and MoveOn is funded by George Soros, a primary investor in Brazilian offshore drilling. They promote an agenda against domestic coal mining and offshore drilling that would compete with their foreign energy holdings.

Exxon is committed as a corporation to promote the global warming hoax which is used as the main justification for “cap-and-trade”:

It’s also VERY popular with carbon credits opportunists like Al Gore and Goldman Sachs.

Not to mention the corrupt dictators of every third world dungheap on the planet, who will get to trade their credits (i.e., their country’s air) for French Riviera mansions and Bahrain bank accounts.
