The release of the Lockerbie bomber has damaged the reputation of Scotland across the globe, former Labour first minister Jack McConnell has warned.
He condemned the move and said it must be made clear it was not done in the name of the Scottish people.
Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was freed from Greenock prison on Thursday to be allowed home to Libya to die.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, Mr McConnell said the sight of the Scottish flag being waved as Megrahi arrived back in Libya had brought shame on Scotland.
He said: "The way in which the decision has been made and the decision itself have damaged the reputation of the Scottish justice system - historically our legal system has had a fantastic international reputation.
"It's damaged that reputation, but much more significantly it's also damaged the reputation of Scotland internationally.
"I think it's absolutely vital that the Scottish Parliament now takes action to limit that damage and to give a clear indication to the rest of the world that when the Scottish Government made this decision they were not acting with the support of the people of Scotland." He said the decision was a "grave error of judgement" and claimed there had been other options for additional compassionate relief without Megrahi being freed.
The attack comes the day after the director of the FBI accused Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill of having made a "mockery of justice".

Has Senator Specter, America’s foremost expert on Scottish law, weighed in on this yet?
Yeah, all those strongly worded letters are really bringing the Scots down.
Brown and Obama - two of a terrorist-loving kind.
I’ll bet the average Scott is just about as appalled as we are.

ITS A SHITE STATE OF AFFAIRS TO BE IN, TOMMY!
Not to mention the Scottish scum living at 10 Downing.
Wife and daughter have just cancelled a 10 day trip into Glasgow and touring all around the highlands and outer isles because of this terrible act!
Ah,excuse me.Was the final decision made by an individual who was elected by the Scottish people? Or by an individual who was appointed by someone who was elected by the Scottish people? If the answer to either question is "yes" then it was,at least, done in the name of the majority of the Scottish people.
Looks like something our own traitor in chief would do!
Keep our own Kenyan Klown in mind when slamming the Scots.
In terms of justice, by my way of thinking, premeditated murder of someone means you get the death penalty and he killed a lot more than one, including killing the spirits, hopes, and life of many of those who lost someone thanks to his bombing. Releasing him only harms those who survived his taking the life of someone they loved. Where's the Christian kindness in that?
He should have died in a Scottish cell asking his God to forgive him. Instead, he gets a hero's welcome home and the embrace of those who love him. Either the judge is an evil bastard or he believes the convicted bomber is innocent.

3. OIL.
Err, well sorry Mr McConnell, but I'm afraid that it WAS done in the name of the Scottish people. You can't backtrack out of that responsibility because its turned out to be an incredibly unpopular (and stupid) decision.
I remain sceptical. I think a deal has been done.
Come to England instead! We don’t have midges, the scenery is just as lovely and, amazingly, the food is better :)
That is not true. Just because you elect someone doesn't mean their every act is done in your name. Are you saying that if the frickin' dimwits pass their health care bill over the wish of the people it is done in the people's name simply because these POS were elected? Your reasoning is very faulty. The scots were raising he** about this before the terrorist slime ball was released, how does that equate to "being done in their name"?
If this is an elected official or someone appointed by an elected official then that official's act is ultimately the responsibility of the electorate.
Are you saying that if the frickin' dimwits pass their health care bill over the wish of the people it is done in the people's name simply because these POS were elected?
Yup.Given that the majority of voters voted for Hussein they (the majority) will be getting just what they deserved.
Words have consequences.Actions have consequences.Votes have consequences.
