New York Post ^ | August 20, 2009 | LAURA ITALIANO and CLEMENTE LISI

This time, he didn't catch a pass.

In a surprise move, former Giants superstar Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty today to attempted gun possession -- agreeing to a two-year prison term rather than face a guaranteed higher sentence if convicted at trial.

VACCARO: PLAXICO RECEIVED THE EVERY-MAN TREATMENT

The time behind bars -- which will work out to 20 months with good behavior -- is his penance for accidently shooting himself in the thigh with his own Glock at a crowded Midtown nightclub last November.

I agree that his punishment is too harsh. In New York, owning an unregistered gun is punished more severely than actually harming someone else.

NYC law is pretty clear. He or his bodyguard could get a license - as a celebrity he has a good enough reason. Agreed, the NYC law is a bad one - open carry is a much better option. Punishment was too draconian, imho.

Yea I agree, wtf is Attempted gun possesion? Either the writer of the story is confused or the law is confusing. I can be attempting to possess a gun all day without actually possessing one. Am I guilty?

From what I’ve heard the victim stepped in front of Stallworth’s vehicle, thus the light sentence.

Too bad for him he didn’t do it in some horrible, racist state like Tennessee, Texas, Florida, or Georgia and have his case investigated by a good ‘ol boy white Republican sheriff. After being laughed at for the dumb thing he did shooting himself, the worst that would have happened would have been a misdemeanor rap with no jail time, even if he ended up going before a white male jury of NRA Life Members. Of course, such a jury would have probably acquitted him of everything but stupidity.

Your comment was short and to the point...and on the money.

This guy was going down this track for a loooong time and it finally caught up with him. You may not know that he and a few of his thug pals (right before the first preseason game during his first season with the Giants) were likely the perpetrators of some gunplay in the Bronx when they were caught behind a garbage truck and became impatient with it doing its job on a side street. It was his rental car that was abandoned, and a very tall African American male was seen running like hell by the cops when they responded.

He was a pain in the *ss at Mich State, a pain in the *ss at Pittsburgh and a pain in the *ss with the Giants. If he wasn't who he is, he likely would have had a few felonies by now.

Yeah...he was a great receiver, but good riddance to bad rubbish.

"... the miscarriage is that if he had done this in virtually any other NFL city, he would have gotten off with a much lighter charge, if any.

That's the real irony of it. In most, he still would have been charged for carrying concealed without a permit, but he wouldn't have done any hard time.

Just another NFL thug.

I know some folks who had dealings with him when he was with the Steelers. They say he's not a thug at all... a relatively nice guy for a pro jock... but dumb as a box of rocks.

From what I heard on ESPN, he took a plea deal and got convicted of a lesser charge because he was worried that if he hadn’t, he would spend more time in prison.

Exactly, and he still got a break because he could of got 3.5 years, but they got it down to 2, and will probably be released in about 20 months. He still caught a break during the sentencing.
Maybe this is the end of his career, but I think he got what he deserved. Good wake up call to the other NFL players who revel in the “thug” culture of packing heat in nightclubs and when driving around town without permits because it makes them feel like a badass.

Plax would have been better off killing someone while driving under the influence. Stallworth served, what, 24 days?

The Justice system is broken.....not to mention bizarre.

Burress screwed up. Instead of saying the gun went off accidentally, he should have claimed he was shooting at a dog for fun.

I don't agree at all. The guy didn't hurt anyone but himself. Hit him with a fine and heavy community service, but putting him in prison is just BS in my estimation.

As a poster said above, if it had happened in most other NFL cities, he would have paid a heavy fine, but he would not have to do hard time just for being stupid.

The law in New York City is more stupid than Burris, which is saying a lot. They didn't give him two years for what he did. They did it only because they could! They are pricks.

Let’s be fair now. The Patriots beat his ass like a crack hoe who came up short. Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour hit him hard and often.

If he killed someone via drunk driving, he is only looking at 30 days! (see Stalworth). 2 years is excessive here.
