Cancer-stricken Sen. Kennedy asks state leaders for speedy process to replace him in Congress

BOSTON (AP) — A cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has written a poignant letter to Massachusetts leaders asking that they change state law to allow a speedy replacement of him in Congress.

The note to Gov. Deval Patrick and the state's Senate president and House speaker acknowledges the state changed its succession law in 2004 to require a special election to fill any vacancy. At the time, legislative Democrats were concerned Republican Gov. Mitt Romney would be able to fill any vacancy created as Sen. John Kerry ran for president.

They are Stalinist. The rules and the vote counting must be adjusted back and forth so that they seize power every time. It isn’t about the will of the people. It isn’t about consistency. It is about seizing power at whatever cost.

He doesn’t need a replacement. They can just reduce his morphine, roll him in on a stretcher and tell him to say “aye”.

if I may....you can't "cherry pick" the laws you want to obey, or change them for each circumstance....

someone should take this to Court...

if this stands, then we will see more Florida voting, more Minn. voting...where different rules apply to different people....

but I've given up on the stupid people of Mass...its run by the mob and people will vote for their mob bosses....

So predictable. AOL commie news leads with “Ted Kennedy’s plea” and a portrait style picture. They are so foolish and despicable. We already know what they will write in advance at the Asspress and other Obama slurping news agencies.

If man doesn't impose them, God for sure will!

Anyone think Mary Jo Kopechne will be there at the Pearly Gates to greet Teddy to Heaven?

He wants his wife to replace him. If he wants to speed up the process, he could resign now.

I'm just getting to this thread now, so sorry if I post something already discussed. Yours is the first post I got to.

Resigning now won't speed up the process. It would probably freeze out the choice he's asking for, because the special election process would automatically begin, making it too late for the legislature to change it once it has started.

Kennedy doesn't want to give the people a chance to vote for a Republican -- he wants to ensure that the seat goes to a Democrat to preserve the 60-vote filibuster-proof Senate. In fact, with Kennedy immobilized, the Senate is not filibuster-proof now. Kennedy cannot vote absentee -- he must be present to vote.

He wants the legislature to change the law while he's still in the Senate, then he'll resign. Once he resigns, it's too late the change the rules regarding his replacement, as the Governor will be under pressure to set the date of the special election, if the law doesn't already specify it.

I think Mitt Romney ought to throw his name into the hat for the Senator’s seat in the special election. Kennedy is worried that the backlash on the healthcare will put a republican in his seat - WOW wouldn’t THAT be justice!

I agree that somebody like Romney should come forward NOW and declare interest in running for the seat. This would be a pre-emptive strike against the legislature trying to change the law when a former-governor of the state has already declared his interest in running for it.

That would give Romney the leverage to rally support against the Democrats, declaring that they're trying to steal his opportunity to run for the seat from him, by changing the very law that they took from him in the first place.

Amazing... they make a special law to prevent a Republican governor from appointing a senator, and now that they have a senator they want to replace it’s all “Oh nevermind what we said before, let’s do it the old way this time.”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Because given the current political mood, there’s an even chance a Republican might win a special election in Mass.

It’s just too bad that MA voters weren’t smart enough to “replace” him a great many elections ago.

The press greatly over-estimates the “love” the American people have for this bloated, privileged, self-entitled murderer and drunk.

Oh boy- we get wall-to-wall coverage when this POS bites it.

If one must live in MA, just please say only one person lives at your house come census time.

Blue states need to lose population.

Yeah, uh huh...it's vital when there is a democrat governor to do the appointing, not so vital when a republican governor would do the appointing.

Slimy, lowlife hypocrites!
