NYT: DEMS PLAN TO GO IT ALONE ON HEATHCARE... DEVELOPING...

Democrats see little chance for GOP cooperation on health care

WASHINGTON — Given hardening Republican opposition to congressional health care proposals, Democrats now say they see little chance for the minority's cooperation in approving any overhaul, and are increasingly focused on drawing support for a final plan from within their own ranks.

Top Democrats said Tuesday that their go-it-alone view was being shaped by what they saw as Republicans' purposely strident tone against health care legislation during this month's congressional recess, as well as remarks by leading Republicans that current proposals were flawed beyond repair.

The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said of Republican lawmakers, "Only a handful seem interested in the type of comprehensive reform that so many people believe is necessary to ensure the principles and the goals that the president has laid out."

The Democratic shift may not make producing a final bill much easier. The party must still reconcile the views of moderate and conservative Democrats worried about the cost and scope of the legislation with those of more progressive lawmakers determined to win a government-run insurance option to compete with private insurers..........

Yep, the folks here cheering for this to pass so it can be stuck on the Dems are missing the point completely. Once it’s in, this monstrosity will never be unloaded short of a complete government breakdown (which may be coming soon enough). The only ones who will truly suffer is the American people, so please quit thinking about the party calculus.

What the hell does this mean anyway?

The health care bill war produced with zero input from Republicans. The Demcrats have “gone it alone” from day one.

Given the ground swell around the country against this BS, I'm willing to bet they get some major defections if they even get it to the floor of either house.

Lindsey Graham has said several times that there is not enough support in the Senate for the public option. I wonder if he means 60 or 50.

People will show up in DC and dismantle the city. By hand. Brick by brick.

-- Obama is a gatekeeper. Congress can push legislation past the President, but it's harder. --

Much legislation originates by the executive (USA PATRIOT Act; warrantless snooping via FISA; etc.) but the only way legislation becomes law is if the Congress passes it.

My point is to direct heat to Congress. As a fiction, this isn't "Obama's" plan, this is a Congressional plan. Congress has complete freedom in crafting legislation. The power that the president has is conditional rejection; where Congress can override presidential rejection.

"why did martinez jump ship before this went down?"

I have no idea. The only thing I heard was he was pissed about the opposition to Sotomayer, which tells you exactly where his loyalties really are.

He's NOT gettin' a SECOND term.

I've NEVER in my life seen a President move so FAST
and do so much HARM in my life!

To "go it alone", they will have to have those "Blue
Dog" Democraps. There will be LOTS of pressure on these
12-13 guys. (Not exactly sure how many).

Wow !!

In 1986, I think, Congress passed a catastrophic health care bill. It was such a disaster with the public, it was abolished the following year.

They must think they have bought/intimidated enough bluedogs/moderates to get the simple majority they need. The delay was never about a filibuster, it was about the House. Keep up the pressure!

If they push it through the house will be majority republican in a year and a half. BTW the next issue is amnesty for illegals.

IIRC, it wasn’t just the titans that shrugged, but anyone who was a true producer, proud of their work. Remember the repairman in Dagny’s officer early in the book? He was no titan, was he? (I’m still working my way through it....)

There isn’t even one official bill yet. Aren’t the shell shufflers still talking about five of them?

Yes, I think they have a bill for everyone and they will extrapolate parts from each piece of legislation trying to get it right! There's no hope for them to pass anything through without it fracturing the RAT party into several pieces. I love it when they eat their own! lol..

There’a a first time for everything. Most entitlements were created in the B.R. (Before Rush) Era, when the people were less informed than today.

-- And Obama says "too damn bad". --

Legislation is purely a Congressional prerogative. They may take advice from outside, but Congress owns what Congress passes.

True, but a few weeks ago I saw Harry Reid say, "President Obama is the quarterback -- he calls the plays." I was astonished at his abdication of his Constitutional responsibility.

The Democrats in Congress are willing to follow Obama's arrogance all the way down. They will pay, and they don't even see it yet.

"Lindsey Graham has said several times that there is not enough support in the Senate for the public option. I wonder if he means 60 or 50."

I think that Gramnesty, and others, are pontificating based on the Senate operating under normal rules, which would mean 60. And, I agree. There aren't remotely close to 60. But, they are damn close to 50, and with Reconciliation on the table - which Drudge's headline leads me to believe - I think they've got the votes in the Senate.
