WASHINGTON Apparently ready to abandon the idea, President Barack Obama's health secretary said Sunday a government alternative to private health insurance is "not the essential element" of the administration's health care overhaul.
The White House indicated it could jettison the contentious public option and settle on insurance cooperatives as an acceptable alternative, a move embraced by some Republicans lawmakers who have strongly opposed the administration's approach so far.
Officials from both political parties reached across the aisle in an effort to find compromises on proposals they left behind when they returned to their districts for an August recess. Obama has been pressing for the government to run a health insurance organization to help cover the nation's almost 50 million uninsured.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the White House would be open to co-ops instead of a government-run public option, a sign Democrats want a compromise so they can declare a victory on the must-win showdown.

What will happen if they silence talk radio and Fox News?
I heard rumors that Rush had plans to go to the Bahamas, out of US jurisdiction, and set up a radio station there. It would be like the days of “Radio Free Europe” when we broadcast the news and information behind the Iron Curtain.
And, with literally millions of web sites, can they control the whole flow of information online? Just wondering, if they surpress talk radio, maybe the online community will grow more to compensate?
Is the internet even under the jurisdiction of the FCC or any other government agency?
“Reverse this clunker and drive for freedom.”
Mind if I lift this for my tagline/protest sign?
Spin baby spin.
I wonder if they will somehow require insurance companies to cover the uninsured? Then, inevitably costs will rise, and Obama will be able to hammer them for high premiums and high costs, totally ignoring the costs he will impose on them.
If its true, credit belongs on this web site.
The entire bill needs to be killed. Same with Medicare and Social Security. The Feds should have absolutely no stake in health care, retirement, or any other issue that cannot be handled by the states. We need to elect politicians who will begin the task of dismantling the Federal behemoth instead of making it larger. It has to be dismantled - there is no other path to “smaller government.”
They never give up. They won’t give up until we have full blown socialized medicine. After the Clinton failure in ‘94, they went into hiding for years on this issue, only to revive it when they thought the time was right.
It speaks volumes about how unpopular this is. Consider that you have a Democrat president and strong Democrat majorities in Congress. Yet they still can’t get to the socialized medicine utopia even with big majorities in Congress.
Can somebody give me a quick and dirty as to how these health cooperatives would work?
And what then? I'll answer that question. Once co-ops are formed, the government will simply take them over just as they did two auto manufacturers and a host of financial institutions.
Anyone who places any trust at all in the present administration is a fool!
That’s cool, most Republicans are fine with two steps forward one step back. Patience libtards we will get to equlity of condition soon.
Were on the road to nowhere, la la la la la la. I mean serfdom.
“...a move embraced by some Republicans lawmakers who have strongly opposed the administration’s approach so far.”
I read that Grassley looked at this option and balked because the WH and Dems in Congress insisted that they name the directors of the so called coops. If the WH gets to name the directors then that is simply government controlled/run healthcare in an indirect way. Grassley would only agree to consider this option if the coops were run just like the House and Senate Ethics Committees, equal representation of both dems and Repubs. Of course the dems said “no.”
That’s true. Very little is being said about how this will affect the number and quality of health care workers in the future. We have a shortage NOW. With an aging demographic it is only going to get worse. Health professionals are currently leaving the profession due to high costs, especially malpractice insurance. We need tort reform.
Not long ago on his radio show, Glenn Beck warned that what would happen is that legislation that they could never get through intact would be split up into jigsaw puzzle pieces that would be gradually inserted into various unrelated pieces of legislation.
He warned that the individual pieces wouldn’t make much sense by themselves but once assembled, would form a picture too awful to imagine.
They will remove just enough of the most offensive parts of Obamacare to make it palatable for enough people to get it through.
Then, with the basic framework in place, one by one they will add more pieces to the puzzle until they have what they want, and the people won’t know what hit them.
Don’t think for a minute that King Obama and his posse will give up on this.
Bull.
It is Unconstitutional for the Federal Government to have any roll or say in the delivery of medical services in this country.

What Republicans need to do instead of jumping in bed with the Democrats, is to fight this war down to the last man. What did Hitler use to say, this will be my last request for a concession or something like that every time he occupied new territory. Same here, any concession gives credence to their lies and leads to our defeat.
What they should do now is pull every statement every Dem made about how they couldn’t make it work without a public option and show them for the manipulating liars they are.
Fool me once....
Don’t let up.
This is just a meaningless ploy to tamp down critics and town halls.
The fight must continue and continue to ratchet up
The only legit outcome is to kill the entire bill
NO COMPROMISES!!!!!
