President Shifts Focus To Renting, Not Owning Home

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration, in a major shift on housing policy, is abandoning George W. Bush’s vision of creating an “ownership society’’ and instead plans to pump $4.25 billion of economic stimulus money into creating tens of thousands of federally subsidized rental units in American cities.

The idea is to pay for the construction of low-rise rental apartment buildings and town houses, as well as the purchase of foreclosed homes that can be refurbished and rented to low- and moderate-income families at affordable rates.

They put in about six of these types of units about five blocks from my house, and they’re still two-thirds empty after five months. NONE of the ground-level retail space has been purchased or leased.

In the Seattle area, everywhere you look, they’re tearing down houses and replacing them with high-density.

Great! Tearing down ugly craftsmen houses in favor of even uglier concrete boxes. WAY TO GO Seattle! Pretty soon, you'll be as attractive as Fort Lee, NJ.

Well someone has to live in those FORECLOSED Homes.

The Zero administration is absolutely out of control. They run from one hair brain scheme to another.

Let's not forget...this has nothing to do with housing, either owning or renting, and EVERYTHING to do with control. This is just one more example of using a means to an end.

I meant to say: They will make it difficult or impossible to develop land that’s NOT already developed.

That's how I see it. But in Seattle, even single-family home-owners aren't safe. There's a proposal on the table that would require a permit to cut down a tree on you rown property. And the permit isn't automatic - the city would have to APPROVE your action. Even now, if you want to cut down three or more trees, you need a permit.

“When people are “renting” government owned housing, they do not take care of it. The places are trashed within a year or two.”

Which is the very reason Bush encouraged ownership.

In my area the city just completed destruction of a large section of condemned “project housing.”

The government has been building nice places for them for years. And, they are destroyed in less than a year. They have moved some of these people into the suburbs, and other nice neighborhoods, trashing them, and causing the decent people to leave, at least those who can afford to get the hell out. Scattered site housing ruins entire towns and suburbs. The only way to get them off their duffs, and grab a broom, is to allow them to live so badly, that they will get the gumption to change. Instead, we enable them to be slobs, and the government demands we allow the trash to trash our communities.

here’s an idea

build these homes in areas which voted for bozo

I’m sure those elitist folks up in the north east wouldn’t mind some projects next to their mcmansions

I’ve been fighting to stop these kind of homes in my area.

if the left wants this then let the left have them in their backyard, places like chappaqua westchester couunty NY should have some projects and let these places be rented out to folks

nail head.

give some 2grand and instead of using to to get a decent place or invest they go and buy gold chains, booze, make up or clothes, expensive ones.

but the best part is they love to drive these nice cars.

I saw 3 cars pull up and loads of people got out. heard them saying how they were looking to get to Oralndo.
One of them went in the back of their caddy escalade.

As my wife and I walked by we saw their luggage stacked up, it was all in black trash bags

Works both ways. Let’s not assume the middle class won’t fight back or torch them.

Well, except for the whole “subsidized housing” part.

EVERYWHERE that “Section 8” housing is placed turns into a shit hole.

In NY welfare families got $200 for going back to school.

they went out and bought cigs, booze, gold chains etc

these kind of people do not want to get ahead they want to sponge of others, they do not want to work hard for their kids they want to teach their kids how to rip off the system while looking good in nice clothes and a nice car

Well I for one am fed up of it now

I live in a small house in a working class area but we all take care of our houses minus a couple.
we all work and try to get ahead,. We got this area and house because we could afford it.

so why the hell should I now have to pay for a lazy arse who drives a nice car, with nice clothes who lives like a tramp now be given a nice house paid for by me

I totally agree with you...I was a housing maintenance manager before I retired..I looked after 5,000 units. We had caretakers in every project but it made no difference..something happens to people who live in subsidised housing.

I even had single moms with a couple of children who had until their marriage breakups lived in private houses. They were often the worst..all their common sense seemed to evaporate. They just didn’t care anymore...went into one unit where the kids had removed the kitchen cabinet doors to use them as tobbogans.

I reckon that of the 5,000 units we looked after 60% of them were trashed..every month we repainted over 300 units some with only one year of usage.

If you want to see your tax money wasted bigtime...let your illustrious leader open thousands of public housing units.
