AARP Faces Backlash From Seniors Over Health Care Reform Stance

The senior advocacy group AARP is coming under criticism from its own members for appearing to support President Obama's health care reform plans.

Elected officials aren't the only ones facing frustrated, angry crowds at health care town hall meetings.

The senior advocacy group AARP is now coming under criticism from its own members for appearing to support President Obama's health care reform plans.

The internal debate is heating up as lawmakers prepare to enter what could be the final stretch in writing legislation, with just one committee left to vote on it.

But just as constituents are giving their elected representatives a piece of their mind over the August recess, some seniors are starting to protest the AARP.

Last week, AARP officials speaking at a forum in Dallas walked out after several seniors interrupted the meeting with critical questions and comments.

Some AARP members say they are so outraged that they've taken to tearing up their membership cards and firing off heated letters to the organization's CEO.

Recent polling by FOX News shows seniors, many of whom are on Medicare, don't want a major overhaul -- 93 percent rate their current coverage as good or excellent, and 56 percent say they oppose the creation of a government-run option for all Americans.

Other groups representing seniors say they aren't surprised by the recent backlash.

"We get letters every single day from people that are very upset about this bill and about the AARP supporting it," said Stuart Barton, president of the American Seniors Association. "So I don't blame them for coming back and saying they are going to tear up their AARP cards."

I saw this on Cavuto. Priceless! I dumped AARP years ago. They are a money hungry, lying bunch of elitists.

AARP is a leftwing political organization that does not represent seniors. They represent democrats.

AARP supports the Health Care Bill that will eventually kill off their membership!

If it passes I guess they will have to start mailing out applications to people when they turn 30 since the average life expectancy in this country will drop lower than many third world nations.

He sure is. A lying sack of dog dung. I couldn’t count the lies he told. He even persisted on one after BOR called him on it.

They can lie to their members and 70% get away with it because so many seniors don’t have the inclination to do the research, or are senile, or just too tired to care. That is what AARP is counting on.

I pegged AARP as communists over ten years ago. They started sending me stuff when I was in my early forties. I send their prepaid envelopes back stuffed with their own propaganda cut up and a note telling them “no one likes a commie.”

I've been meaning to for a while, but after I got an anti-protest propaganda letter from them today, I canceled my membership and requested a refund.

I politely explained to both of the ladies who helped me that I was no longer comfortable being a member of an organization that supports the federal takeover of the health care industry, and that as an organization that purports to represent all seniors, they really have no business endorsing the political agenda of either side - just present the facts and let us make an informed decision, not just parrot the Democratic party line, please.

I asked them if they were getting a lot of calls like mine, and they both said that there were a lot of calls from both sides. I wish I had thought to ask them how many of those calls were canceling memberships, versus how many were signing up for their first time or "reupping". Oh well.

If enough people cancel it will hurt them in the pocketbook. It's only 20 or 30 bucks, but it will add up fast if enough of us pull out.

Just curious if Bill O is correcting the AARP lies from this guy... or letting them stand.

Their little stunt in Dallas put me over the top Saturday. I fished out 2 years of AARP magazines, and sent all the free mailers with nasty notes written on them. The grand total was 91. If everyone else would do this, I’d bet they ‘d get the message.
