Because of distorted sales figures, Ford's Escape cross-over SUV, not the Focus small car, tops the list for most popular 'clunker' buy.
What are people trading their clunkers in for? It depends on who you ask.
The government's results showed small cars as the top choice for shoppers looking for Cash for Clunker deals. But an independent analysis by Edmunds.com disputed those results, and showed that two full-size trucks and a small crossover SUV were actually among the top-ten buys.
The discrepancy is a result of the methods used. Edmunds.com uses traditional sales measurements, tallying sales by make and model. The government uses a more arcane measurement method that subdivides models according to engine and transmission types, counting them as separate models.
For example, the Ford Escape is available in six different versions including two- and four-wheel drive and hybrid versions. The government counts each version as a different vehicle using guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency. Only the front wheel drive, non-hybrid version made the government's top ten list.

2 Ford Focus
3 Jeep Patriot
4 Dodge Caliber
5 Ford F-150
6 Honda Civic
7 Chevrolet Silverado
8 Chevrolet Cobalt
9 Toyota Corolla
10 Ford Fusion
This list makes sense why esle all the lobbying to stimulate Toyota?
Support Ford, the only American automaker that didn’t take a government buyout.
The gold old Ford F-150, the beacon of high fuel efficiency transportation.
so the gubment lied, what a surprise
So the Cash for UAW plan was a complete Failure. The people bought gas guzzlers like they wanted. Perhaps this regime should look at lowering fuel prices rather than sending out their thugs to make us do things that are unAmerican?
Pray for America
True,
I wish I was in the United States right now. I would definitely participate in this deal. I am unfortunately exempt from this program being stationed overseas. I have a car with 122 thousand miles and is a 1997. When I return to the U.S. I am getting a new car anyway. This would have been beautiful...oh well screwed again...lol.
Honda and Toyota are the best car makers in my humble opinion. I can’t imagine having any other type of car.
....I narrowed my choices down to Jeep Patriot and Ford F-150....I bought the Ford truck after I found out that several banks weren’t taking Jeep’s paper any more....even though I was a cash buyer, I didn’t like to hear that about Jeep.
Particularly if it has the 300 cubic inch 6 cylinder which is a great engine but OMG the 10-11 mpg curse on it.
parsy, who has that engine in his Bronco
I see the Dodge Caliber is on the list. It’s appropriate to see that on a list of vehicles sold with government help since the motor feels like it came out of a Soviet tractor.
“Particularly if it has the 300 cubic inch 6 cylinder which is a great engine but OMG the 10-11 mpg curse on it.

That wonderful engine went away in the late 90’s for the modular V-6.
I am amazed that the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado are a part of this deal.Neither is what I would call a gas saver, In fact I would think that the Silverado and the F-150 would be listed as one of the models accepted as a guzzler.
Dunno if the Ford Ranger is available under hussein’s program...I would think it would be a better buy than the F-150, and with better mileage.
Mine’s a mid 80’s model. Are you sure they don’t still make the 300 straight?
parsy, who has thought about putting a new engine in his
I think the only criteria is the miles per gallon which is like 3 or 4 mpg or something.
parsy, who thinks the plan should have had higher targets
I got a Ford Escape yesterday, not he hybrid,yesterday....I really like it.
Has Hussein decided to release the figures on this latest Big Brother swindle, or are they still being hidden—for national security purposes, I suppose!
And how about the July financial information? Hussein deep-sixed all of that as well. Didn’t want the serfs upset just before the Healthscam vote. I wonder when those figures will be released. And will they bear any resemblance to the actual figures Barry received in the first place?
Yeah, I had the earlier version - the 240 cubic inch six - in my first car, a '66 Ford Galaxie. Smooth, quiet and it'd probably run forever. With over 100K miles on it, compression was dropping a bit, so my dad helped me swap in a 302 and C-4 out of a wrecked Granada. Mileage increased by five mpg.
