Dean on Palin’s health care claims: ‘She made that up’ Posted: August 9th, 2009 10:17 AM ET

From From CNN's David deSola

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told CNN Sunday that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had deliberately made up charges that the Obama administration’s health care bill would lead to euthanasia.

“About euthanasia, they're just totally erroneous. She just made that up,” he said. “Just like the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ that she supposedly didn't support.

“There's nothing like euthanasia in the bill. I practiced medicine for a long time, and of course you have to have end of life discussions — the patients want that. There's nothing… euthanasia's not in this bill.”

Dean was referring comments Palin made late Friday in a post on her Facebook page. In her post, the former Republican vice presidential candidate said President Obama’s health care plan would create a “death panel” that would weigh whether her parents or son Trig were “worthy of health care.”

She discounted the administration’s view that the president’s plan would cut health care costs, saying the only path to lower costs was less treatment.

Riiight. The evidence is overwhelming of what Obama’s true intent is with healthcare, seniors, and those not considered ‘worthy’ of help when ‘others’ have need.

I assume Citizen Dean flagged her statement as fishy and sent it to The Authorities at the Ministry of Truth.

Hey Howard, there was nothing about euthanasia in Palin's statements. Palin's statement concerned the inherent need to ration health care once it is free and easily available to everyone. The government bureaucracy will have to make decisions on who gets care and who doesn't.

We need to ask the public one simple question...and I’d phrase it this way:

Do we really want to entrust these same people with our healthcare? Look at their track record...

The word “euthanasia” is not in the bill.

The bill simply has a provision for good people to help other good people come to the correct end of life decisions and to “help them with that process”.

It’s all about “helping”.

PG 430 Lines 11-15 – The government will decide what level of treatment terminal patients will receive near end of life

Page 472 Lines 14-17 – The federal government will pay the community based organizations for operation of the community-based medical care system…ACORN again?

PG 489 Sec 1308 – The government will provide for and control family therapy care. They are now into your most intimate affairs of your marriage.

“About euthanasia, they're just totally erroneous...

Erroneous? Really?

Oregon Offers to Pay to Kill, but Not to Treat Cancer Patient

SALEM, Oregon, June 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Lung cancer patient, Barbara Wagner, was recently notified that her oncologist-prescribed medication that would slow the growth of cancer would not be covered by the Oregon Health Plan; the plan, however, she was informed, would cover doctor-assisted suicide should she wish to kill herself.

"Treatment of advanced cancer that is meant to prolong life, or change the course of this disease, is not a covered benefit of the Oregon Health Plan," read the letter notifying Wagner of the health plan's decision.

Wagner says she was shocked by the decision. "To say to someone, we'll pay for you to die, but not pay for you to live, it's cruel," she told the Register-Guard. "I get angry. Who do they think they are?"

This past Monday morning, however, Wagner had reason to rejoice. A representative from the company that manufactures the treatment called the cancer patient to say they would give her the medication for free.

"I am just so thrilled," she said. "I am so relieved and so happy."

Dr. Walter Shaffer, medical director of the state Division of Medical Assistance Programs, which administers the Oregon Health Plan, attempted to defend the health plan's decision. "We can't cover everything for everyone," he said. "We try to come up with polices that provide the most good for the most people." Shaffer then addressed a priority list that had been developed to ration health care. "There's some desire on the part of the framers of this list to not cover treatments that are futile," he said, "or where the potential benefit to the patient is minimal in relation to the expense of providing the care."

According to an AP story on Wagner's case, local oncologists in Oregon have said that, despite the Health Services Commission's assertion that they were just clarifying policies already in place, healthcare practitioners have observed a sizable shift in policy in the way recurrent cancer is treated in the state. Increasingly, say local oncologists, sufferers of recurrent cancer are not receiving coverage for chemotherapy. They are always, however, eligible for state-funded assisted suicide.

Wesley J. Smith, a prominent conservative bioethicist, says that he was not surprised by the events.

"We have been warning for years that this was a possibility in Oregon. Medicaid is rationed, meaning that some treatments are not covered. But assisted suicide is always covered. And now, Barbara Wagner was faced with that very scenario."

Smith also mentioned a similar circumstance that had occurred in the past: "This isn't the first time this has happened either. A few years ago a patient who needed a double organ transplant was denied the treatment but would have been eligible for state-financed assisted suicide."

Not so erroneous after all, huh?

When Palin said that President Obama’s health care plan would create a “death panel” that would weigh whether her parents or son Trig were “worthy of health care,” she was not referring to euthanasia-related provisions. She was talking about the new panel that would determine formulas to calculate what procedures and other care would be allowed for various categories of patients.

Those decisions WILL result in the deaths of many patients, but not by specific euthanasia procedures.

So, once again, Dean lies.
