How to wear all-age cardigans [First Lady trend setter]
The Telegraph ^ | 8/8/2009 | Lucia van der Post

This autumn, cardigans are going to be big, short and cute or long and elegant

Though I dare say Michelle Obama would prefer to be remembered for more than plumping up the sales of J. Crew’s knitwear, it is for her services to the cardigan that she will long be talked about on planet fashion. What she’s done is to show us how to wear it with panache. She’s made it look fresh, modern and perfectly capable of holding its own in the highest of places. So it was that when the distinguished but stately designer Oscar de la Renta told Women’s Wear Daily that “You don’t go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater,” it was he who seemed foolish, not the fresh and breezy Michelle O.

As Amy Fine Collins, chief style correspondent for Vanity Fair, puts it, “It’s clever not to wear the jacket all the time, which can look stiff and proper. The cardigan covers up in the same way, but it’s soft and versatile.”

The fragrant Martha Stewart was just as enthusiastic: “If our First Lady wears J. Crew to greet the Queen of England, no reason I can’t wear J. Crew to a business dinner. The great thing about this is it’s so freeing.”

How you wear a cardigan matters. While the young royals, for instance, or funky models (Agyness Deyn) and the music set (Lily Allen), use the cardigan to dress an outfit down, flinging a cardie over a prom or ball dress as if to say, “I’m not really all dressed up,” the 30-plus woman uses it precisely to dress an outfit up.

Michelle, Michelle!! Have a thorough eye examination & find a good full length, 3-way mirror before you set foot in a clothing store again.

Just between us, dear - you look like you're wearing rags.

What is it with Democrats and cardigans?

The current occupant seems bent on bringing back the rest of the Carter era.

UH! What a Hoe! (I’d spell it a different way, but I’d probably get banned.)

Ho. There. I don't think I will get banned.

Didn’t you know before the fabulous Michelle, women had never worn sleeveless tops or dresses in the summer? My goodness until she came along we thought we were to wear floursacks (unbelted of course) year round. I do believe she is the mother of fashion as Gore is the father of the internet.

“Fresh, modern”, “soft, versatile”......sounds like they’re describing a sofa.

Heh. He already looks like a real Melvin. His dweeb quotient will go up about 20 points in a cardigan.

If he's standing next to the First Skank it will look like Jack Sprat and his wife (she's got to be three times as wide across the beam as he is), crossed with American Gothic, with a black version of Revenge of the Nerds thrown in for good measure.

>Michelle O often treats cardigans as if they were a jacket or blazer and uses them to pull a look together. Sometimes she belts it, giving it a more structured, formal shape. It doesn’t always work, but no matter<

Groan!

Perhaps one that looks like it fits over the gut would be in order.

Yeah, those buttons look like they are fighting for their lives. Stand clear! One might blow off any minute!
