Russian Subs Patrolling Off East Coast of U.S.
The New York Times ^ | August 4, 2009 | Mark Mazzetti & Thom Shanker

WASHINGTON — A pair of nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines has been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States over recent days, a rare mission that has raised concerns inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies about a more assertive stance by the Russian military.

The episode has echoes of the cold war era, when the United States and the Soviet Union regularly parked submarines off each other’s coasts to steal military secrets, track the movements of their underwater fleets — and be poised for war.

But the collapse of the Soviet Union all but eliminated the ability of the Russian Navy to operate far from home ports, making the current submarine patrols thousands of miles from Russia even more surprising for military officials and defense policy experts.

“I don’t think they’ve put two first-line nuclear subs off the U.S. coast in about 15 years,” said Norman Polmar, a naval historian and expert on submarine warfare.

Trick question! Putin (unfortunately) is not incompetent. BHusseinO is way past his own level of incompetence.

Ahh, that wasn't very hard was it? ;0)

True, but if the message they wanted to send was “watch out, the Russians are back, and we can turn your cities into ash in five minutes flat” wouldn’t they deploy their ballistic missile submarines which would send just such a message?

I mean obviously any time a world power deploys their submarines in such an aggressive manner off of our coasts we should be alarmed, but given the timing to their failed SLBM tests, this seems a lot like a face saving move.

I think that K-219 sank because they were experimenting or testing supercavitation torpedos like Jeff Head talked about in his books! Anyone else that has read the books agree?

K-219 (Yankee class SSBN) was more due to drunken pipefitters in the shipyard. Seawater piping failed, where seawater got into one of the missile tubes. The missiles carried at the time were liquid fueled, and carried the fuel in the missiles instead of being fueled before launch. Soviet solid fuel technology for large motors might have not been quite there yet. Anyhow, the seawater came in contact with the nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer, filling part of the sub with chlorine gas and some oxide of nitrogen. Nasty stuff. Then there was a cascade of other failures, finally resulting in a reactor control failure. A reactor breach was averted by a sailor who manually shut the reactor down, and got a lethal dose in the process. At least one of the missiles was discharged from the launch tube (likely one where there was seawater contamination), probably to avoid an on board explosion.
While the sub was being evacuated, the useless POS zampolit could not be bothered with the other crew being safely evacuated, and fought his way to the lifeboat.

The supercavitating torpedo incident was the Kursk, an Oscar class SSGN.

Maybe they’re planning to take out Congress. Now that would be such a shame.

Yup. Loss of some fine first-rate and historical architecture and furnishings.

Nothing to worry about.

Free societies have traditionally kept close tabs on socialist/communist ones.

The newly free Russians are curious about the new, socialist USSA.

The rockets that are failing are the new ones. The reason why they are failing is that the design or manufacture may have faults. They still have the rockets that are left overs from the Cold War and they are deadly.
