WASHINGTON President Barack Obama is struggling to find a way to pay for an overhaul of the nation's health care system without violating his campaign promise not to raise taxes on the middle class.
Obama's dilemma was highlighted this week when two top economic advisers refused to rule out a middle class tax hike as a possible way to pay the health care overhaul bill or to reduce the rapidly escalating federal deficit.
It would be a distraction from the already difficult sales job needed for Obama's top domestic priority. Critics have booed and jeered lawmakers at home while political parties and interest groups flood the air with a cacophony of competing ads.
Ultimately, the decision to propose tax hikes remains with the president, not a government economist or Cabinet official. Obama's position has not changed: New taxes on the middle class are not a politically viable option.

Translation: Struggling to figure out how to break the pledge.
Time for some spin.
$11 billion/year now goes for health care for illegals. How much more ?
He’s NOT struggling to keep his pledge, he’s just torqued because his people let the cat out of his nontransparent bag.
sw
All of it, I presume.
We'll take a check, too.
How bout the Clinton trick...I never worked harder on anything in my whole life. The Obama media will hold a pity party for the overworked Obama trying to not raise taxes but being forced in to it because of Bush. Grab your wallet. Here comes the Commies.
Billions and billions more...it will be trillions. Obama does not care about Health Care...all of his initiatives are targeted at destroying the free market so he can build a marxist command economy model on its ashes. That is his fundamental change.
They are playing BAD COP to Bammy's GOOD COP.
Bammy can say, the EXPERETS MADE ME DO IT....Don't blame me, they INSISTED I RAISE YOUR TAXES!
Tax rate increases only spike revenues in the early years and primarily because they come out of nowhere (Remember how Billy Jeff turned a tax cut into a tax increase). Over time people change behaviors to lessen their impact. Well since Obie (with the help of the alternative media) has telegraphed this I believe those lifestyle changes have already been taking place. I do not believe any tax rate increase at this point will increase revenues significantly.
Buy rope, tar and feathers.
The latest spin is that the entire deficit was inheirited from Bush. That MIGHT have worked in April but it won’t work in October with 10% unemployment.
The ONLY thing that will work is an income tax increase. A gas tax increase won’t work if you are paying people to biu fuel efficient cars. I have heard that the Democrats want to change the gas tax into a percentage so they get more revenue when gas prices go up. The government can manipulate gasoline supplies.
Oh please. PLEASE break that pledge. I will happily pay a year of higher taxes to flush this turd out of the White House. Consider it a “dickhead” tax.
True. Tax collections will be down by 25% this year. At the same time spending goes up 400%. All of the Liberal schemes are based on 4% growth in the economy and increased tax collections. If the Cap and Trade scheme is passed it will result in huge drops in tax collections. In order to collect income tax you must have income and profits to tax. This leaves the only logical explanation of Obama and Company policy. It is deliberatly set up to destroy the economy and the free market. His mission is to destroy the country he hates.
Oh, he’ll raise the taxes, break his promise,
and the media will act in the EXACT OPPOSITE
way they reacted the George HW Bush’s “read my lips” pledge.
They will excuse it, cover it up, spin it,
and protect their Joker in Chief.
that is so much baloney!
everything they do is planned and orchestrated.
Not change, that is his plan to “remake” Amerika.
He has not, nor has he ever had any intention of keeping that false “pledge.” He’s just casting out for the most politically palpable way to stick it to us.
