Aiken County, SCThe legal drinking age in South Carolina could change if two recent court rulings are upheld.
The rulings in Richland County and Aiken County challenge the states current drinking age of 21.
According to The State newspaper, Aiken Countys Chief Magistrate Judge Rodger Edmonds ruled last month the law, and a similar one involving the possession and consumption of beer and wine in the 18-20 age group, were unconstitutional.
So, do you think the legal drinking age in South Carolina should be lowered from 21? Let us know in our web poll below:

Old enough to serve in the military ... old enough to drink IMO
By drinking age do they mean the age to drink beer, wine, or other low alcohol concoctions? Or is this the drinking age for anything, like the Everclear and Bicardi 151s of the world?
Not that I really care. From 15 or so on I could get any sort of booze I wanted. It’s about as easy to get as pot is for a teenager. Then again if I needed any further reason to avoid bars it would be to be around a bunch of jackass 18 year olds doing shots.
What is the age of majority in SC?
Haha, it won't be that bad after the initial rush....but this is unlikely to happen anytime soon because this is a test on the federal government's authority.
If you’re a legal adult at 18 you should have all rights.
Now, that mean responsibilities, like taking care of yourself
I think the trouble with changing the law is the likely flood of trouble caused by irresponsibility among new, young drinkers. 18 -year-olds are like 13-year-olds in their maturity these days, while 13-year-olds are like 25-year-olds in their innocence level. I blame public education.
I assume this is the state constitution they’re talking about, no?
You said it.

I agree.

Agreed, so long as they are either overseas or on a federal reservation. Looking at your map it appears we both have been there, done that.
Yes, that's correct. If SC changes their law to 18, the federal government won't give the state any highway $$$$...
So? If you're 18 and you sign up for a tour of duty in Afghanistan, by all means, that gives you the right to have a Bud Lite.
Yep. Not to mention: get married, have kids and vote (all of which are way more potentially 'dangerous' than sipping a cold one).
Exactly. If you can die for your country, you should be able to drink a beer.
SC should take that chance. The twisting of states arms started with this crap. The Fed will put a soldier on the battlefield but not let him have a beer afterwords. BS!
‘SECTION 1. Militia.
The militia of this State shall consist of all able-bodied male citizens of the State between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years, except such persons as are now or may be exempted by the laws of the United States or this State, or who from religious scruples may be adverse to bearing arms, and shall be organized, officered, armed, equipped and disciplined as the General Assembly may by law direct. ‘
Funny, at age 18 your part of the Militia to defend the State, but no beer for Tom.
This is true. Unfortunately not all of the 18 year olds in the country sign up for tours of duty in Afghanistan. My point is that they aren’t mature enough for that kind of responsibility, (because Obama will pay their mortgages),and thus their anticipated stupidity ruins the fun for everyone else.
A way to replace the federal spending would be to have a tax on alcoholic beverages.
