Video: Oregon says no to chemotherapy, offers assisted suicide instead
HotAir.com ^ | 8/3/09 | Ed Morrissey

We knew it would come to this when Oregon insisted on passing its assisted-suicide laws. It doesn’t take much for assisted suicide to go from a humane option to a cost-saving device, especially when the state pays for the medical care. One patient in Oregon got a letter that made this all too clear, when in the same letter rejecting her request for life-extending chemotherapy, Oregon offered her “physician-aid-in-dying”. In other words, Oregon offered their customer a heapin’ helping of death:

http://www.katu.com/news/26119539.html

The doctor interviewed by the news station seems offended at the suggestion that Oregon would decide to save a few bucks by denying expensive health care and offering a case of hemlock in its place. However, saving money was the raison d’etre of single-payer systems, and the incentives all drive towards that decision. Single-payer systems have to handle medical services as a shortage market, rationing them by using “comparative effectiveness” paradigms to determine who gets medical attention, and who gets “physician-aid-in-dying” instead of it.

The woman who drew the short end of the stick in this case wonders who these people think they are. They think they know better than us who needs to live and die. Has that lesson still not been made clear?

Some of the first people killed under Hitler were the infirm, the mentally ill, and the disabled.

I am appalled at the lack of respect for life.

Life’s goal is not to balance the financial books or to control the decisions of others — it is to live freely and seek the truth as one’s inner lights dictate.

Why does this administration place life so far down the list?

This is so evil, vile and horrifying I have a hard time believing it is happening in our country. And what does it say about the people of Oregon? Have they lost every trace of decency? Do none of them have elderly loved ones? Or do none of them love their elderly? Why would any group of people put up with this for one hour?

Glad we got out of there! The only thing I really miss about Oregon (besides the awesome berries and cherries) is not having to pump my own gas.

“Oregon voted for Obama.”

I wonder if this lady voted for Obama? You know, because Bush wanted to kill old people.

Yet the Oregon Health Plan only offers coverage for chemo that cures cancer - not if it can prolong a patient's life.

Wonder what kinds of treatment are paid for where AIDS patients are concerned?

My mother is on Tarceva for 4th stage breast cancer and is in year 2 way beyond the statistical expected outcome for her disease. This story scares me to death!

mmm- not so much anymore- rthe truth is rthat only hte young, good looking, and healthy get to enjoy freedom- the rest of us are relegated to the back room to await the ‘decisions’ of the far left as to whether it’s fiancially feasible or not to keep us alive

Late term, mid term, end of life term abortion is always an option for free people when dealing with socialists.

Don’t be a victim.

Hooray Ed Morrissey!

Thanks for posting, Crazieman.
