Dem Pundit Powers: Crowley 'Lured' Gates Outside To Arrest Him
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 08/01/2009 6:01:53 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

As Dem pundits go, I normally find Kirsten Powers among the more reasonable. But on this afternoon's Fox News Watch, Powers propounded perhaps the most despicable theory yet of the Gates/Crowley incident: that the sergeant "lured" and "tricked" Gates into coming outside so he could arrest him.

Panelist Jim Pinkerton had just made the point that it was only the conservative media, by focusing attention on the matter, that saved Sgt. Crowley from a "miserable life in Cambridge" at the hands of Prof. Gates, Harvard, the NAACP et. al, when Powers jumped in . . .

This was the most bizarre thing. She finally said what I have been yelling at the tv as I pass by...that if I saw people I thought were breaking into a house, I would give as complete a description as possiblel. White teenagers, black men, whatever I could tell the 911 operator to help the police.

Then she goes all nutty and says Sgt. Crowley “lured” him outside. No evidence. With the rainbow coalition of Cambridge police on the scene, he deviously “lured” that pompous ass outside just so he could arrest him. Nothing beter to do, right.

Another thing that I noticed is that she is the only one who interrupts and talks over others on that program.

People may disagree on whether or not Gates was lured outside. I read the report and that was the first thing that came to my mind. If I was betting on it, and had cop under sodium pent., thats where my money would go.

I find it sad that you think all policemen are liars and should be drugged into telling the truth. A society where that were true surely deserves destruction. Is your real name Henry Gates by any chance?

If there were someone or several someones in the house with a gun holding the Gates family hostage, the one thing the any police officer would want to do is get the individual outside where he would be safe and could tell him what he couldn't inside without being overheard and getting both of them killed.

All Gates had to do to avoid being arrested was not to go into racist hysterics. But alas, that was too much for him to avoid doing.

Do the DemocRATS really want to prolong this story?

It's not all that whacked out of a theory. I don't know if I'd use the word "tricked" or "lured" but you have a lot more rights inside your home than you do outside of your door. Cops have much more leeway for arrests there for things like "disorderly conduct" or "disturbing the peace" than they do inside the house. They also, in their defense, are less likely to be ambushed outside than in the home.

I don't know enough about the situation to determine if Crowley lured out Gates or not in response to him running his mouth. I wasn't there. I wouldn't say this is a crazy theory though.

This was the most bizarre thing.

This was to be expected. By being invited to the beer bash, Crowley was neutralized. Now the press attacks Crowley. If he responds, they will trash him for being ungrateful after being invited to the White House.

Not all cops are liars, but enough are that they have actually invented a name for it.

Cps writing reports cover their *ss’s. Cop was smart enough to know that he probably couldn’t arrest Gates inside the house. have you read the police report?

parsy.

So they don’t like good police work? Is there an obligation to not take advantage of stupid, race bating, Libtard, Professors? I didn’t see that in the code of conduct.

Absolutely they do! Without group identity politics what have they?

Plus she's cute (for a Lib).

Let’s go further: without race baiting black people to keep them on the DNC plantation by blinding them with specious racial hatred toward Republicans, what elections can they win?

I heard Sgt. Crowley - the one believable person in the entire episode - say that he was following departmental procedure. He asked Gates to step outside because it is not safe for a policeman to enter a dwelling without backup due to the fact that he could get ambushed by other people who could be hiding in the house.

I could not believe that one of the more conservative members of the panel did not speak up to contradict Kirsten - especially since she made a point of saying it more than once. Her story is ridiculous because he asked him to step outside before the real confrontation occurred not because he could not arrest him unless he was outside of the house!

I used to think that she was one of the more reasonable liberal commentators, but she is a real piece of work. Although she is a native of Alaska, she wasted no time stabbing Sarah Palin in the back.

Gates has the wrong nickname. Chip would be much more appropriate.

Whether you agree or not, the story is not ridiculous. Such things happen all the time.

parsy, who will be right back with a link.

If I had been Crowley I would have tasered him. He had it coming

Tasered for what? Being an ass? That's not a crime. Resisting arrest? That wasn't the charge.

I'm glad you aren't the cop, because if I was tasered, which I consider deadley force for some BS, I'd come back with my gun.

It would be interesting to try to convert her to the right side, fruitless, but interesting.

Powers is dead wrong IMHO. Gates was told that (Crowley) was leaving and he could come outside if he had anymore questions. Gates didn’t have to go outside and he didn’t have to yell at the cops. It was his choice. He could have stayed on the phone with the police station.

I can’t read minds, etc. but when I read the line about going outside, it seemed that it was an attempt by Crowley to diffuse the situation.

I doubt the cops would have hung around much once they determined he was the owner and there were no intruders in the house.

Here, read fourth paragraph from the bottom. lawyers would not be warning people about this if it didn’t happen.

“I’m glad you aren’t the cop, because if I was tasered, which I consider deadley force for some BS, I’d come back with my gun”

Please...

Gates was inciting to riot. He was a threat to himself and others. Tasering would have been justified.
