Doc dump details Air Force Ones' New York City mishap
The documents show that the Air Force carefully tracked the explosion of negative press that ensued after panicked New Yorkers feared the low-flying, circling planes were part of a 9/11-like attack.
The e-mails also show various components of the bureaucracy trying to steer clear of the fallout.
Many segments of the documents were redacted to protect "deliberative process." For whatever reason, the white-out seems particularly prevalent surrounding a number of exchanges relating to an inquiry about the flight from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)
Here's a look at some of the juiciest pages among the more than 1000 released Friday. Several of the excerpts below can be seen in the slideshow at the left of the page.
p. 37 On April 24, White House military office aide George Mulligan asks says he wishes he could come along.
p. 38 Turner promises free 8 x 10 glossies courtesy of Boeing.
p. 154 "Show folks we were not involved," one military aide writes after the incident.
p. 155 "Strongly suggest we steer clear of this flail," one National Guard official says, fearing it will look "like we own this."
p. 166 "To say this is being beaten like a dead horse is an understatement," a combat information specialist writes of the media response to the flight.
p. 167 A round-up of media attention notes: "3 tweets per minute."
p. 175 An e-mail says two airborne AF1 photo shoots were planned, the one in NY and one in DC.
p. 196 An Air Force major says the pass-the-buck stance is making everyone involved look like the Three Stooges.
p. 419 Maj Gen Brian Meenan, AF reserve, tried to warn about fallout, but is told coordination with local officials is complete.
p. 456 Turner signs on to describing the mission as "continuation training," not just a photo op.
p. 467 Turner urges spokespeople to "stick with the 'canned' response."
p. 496 Turner defends the mission. "The Vc-25 has not done a photo shoot of this sort since right after aircraft delivery (1990)."
p. 508 Turner runs the flight by Air Mobility Command General Arthur Lichte, who replies: "Will love to see the results of the photo shoot of my home town. Be sure to smile." Turner says the purpose of the flight is to update photos in the "hospitality package" given to guests on Air Force One and that the update is his idea.
p. 512 After the flight, Turner emails Lichte: "As was expected, all of the media has jumped on this as a negative thing."

“Document dump”?
3 months later???
Someone has been combing through those documents thoroughly first, IMHO.
The Air Force must have ordered a ton of aspirin that day figuring out how they are going to be able to deal with this @$$.
Fox News had to take them to court to get this much!
While the head of the White House Military Office, Louis Caldera, was essentially sacked in May, the e-mail exchanges make clear that the ill-fated April 27 mission was really the brainchild of the lead pilot of Air Force One, Col. Scott Turner.

What guests?
I'm given to understand that Air Force One Pilots have advanced past the stage of 5th grade reasoning.
HOOOOOOOOO boy.
SO why would he want to serve this abomination up to Obama? I mean couldn’t he tell the One that this weather really wasn’t conducive to a good view of the city without buzzing the dickens out of it and he strongly suggested rescheduling?
sorta makes one wonder who this guy “Turner” is...
hey
I'm sure we aren't the only ones wondering the same thing?!
So this was for the photos to hand out to passengers in their package aboard AF One? What crap.
When I worked for the AF, my boss was an Advance Agent for Nixon and traveled on AF One to China and Russa with Nixon — pinned on his eagles in Russia. I have one of the packages they gave out them and it was a picture of AF One signed by the President. Also have one of the pens with the Nixon signature on the pen and some other stuff.
ZERO comes along and they want pictures flying over DC and NYC as a mission not when they were flying in on business. What a bunch of crap. You would have to be a jerk to want to fly ZERO around IMHO!
When you look at the manifest, the only reason for so many enlisted and looks like they added more is for the passengers to serve food and drinks. That is a lot of enlisted for this flight.
After this stuff hits the fan, Col. Turner will be lucky to be "flying" a kindergarten chair-desk combo...
Can you say, "thrown to the wolves"...?
Out of 146 photos released, NOT ONE of AF 28000 against the New York Skyline!! NOT ONE!!!!! Also, what happened to the Tusheegee National Guard Fighter with the RED TAIL!!! The people on the ground got better pictures with their point and shoots as they were running for their lives! The AIR FORCE got their best shots of the nondescript Jersey Shore!
Not even a picture with the erranzano Narrows Bridge or the George Washington Bridge! This was a DUMP of a bunch of CRAP! AIR FORCE ONE was up there for the George Lucas IMAX Documentary being filmed about the Anniversary of The Tusheegee Airmen’s Anniversary with Their Namesake Fighter Squadron at the OBOZO’S Orders and probably with a planeload of OBAMSTERS ONBOARD! OBOZO wasn’t joking when he later “Joked” that he had ordered his two Crumb Crunchers to never take AF 1 out for a spin again for kicks! Something really stinks here! Maybe we can catch the “Dead Skunk” yet?
What’s a Presidenecordst? You mean Past President?
Maybe MichelleMaBelle was taking the girls and Granny for a joyride.
