On the evening of July 18, 1969, Mary Jo Kopechne died while trying to free herself from Edward M. Kennedys submerged automobile in a tidal channel on Chappaquiddick Island.
The fortieth anniversary of Miss Kopechnes death passed with scarcely a words being mentioned of it in the media. Perhaps it was not simply a matter of liberal bias. With Senator Kennedy now seriously ill, many journalists no doubt considered that it might be unseemly to bring up the subject.
But however uncomfortable it may be to recall the circumstances of Mary Jo Kopechnes death, Americans must not forget what happened to her, nor must a delicate sensibility prevent us from remembering how a powerful man and his savvy handlers were able to shield him from responsibility for his behavior towards her. Mary Jo Kopechne died because, after recklessly causing an accident, Teddy Kennedy, in his nearly unfathomable self-absorption and political ambition, failed to do what almost anyone would have done to rescue her namely, report the accident and call for emergency help. Instead, Kennedy thought only of himself and his political career.

The man's callousness is shocking, even after all this time.
How he avoided a manslaughter charge, at a minimum, is even more shocking.
With any luck, he will be explaining himself soon...then reaping his reward...
There used to be a site, ytedk.com, that covered every conceivable aspect of the Chappaquiddick incident. It’s gone, vanished, poof.
It would be an interesting reunion if, in fact, Kennedy did not draw the “Go Immediately To Hell” card.
Teddy showed his character long before this tragedy. He was immature and feeling priveleged well before. How he can stand up in public and speak, let alone run for President, is appalling.
And now obammy is giving him the medal of freedom.
I hope there’s video.
Yes, that book is the definitive story of Chappaquiddick. The fact that Damore got Joe Gargan to talk made all the difference.
He describes in detail every event of the night. It will or should make your blood boil.
Kennedy got away with manslaughter at the minimum.
What??? Hadn’t heard that. Is he gettting the medal for all the unborn babies he has helped kill along with drowning a very young and bright woman?
"No, I say to you: but unless you shall do penance, you shall all likewise perish." Luke 13:3
“With any luck, he will be explaining himself soon...then reaping his reward...”
Right after his celestial limo pulls up to the VIP entrance to the gates of hell.
(The idea for this little word picture stolen from P.J. O’Rourke)
David Vitter will always be known as the Senator who slept with hookers (I have a feeling in reality, that would be a very long list). Craig will always be mentioned as a toe-tapper; And Ensign as the guy who had his parents pay off his goomah. But, Kennedy somehow almost completely escapes without any mention of this except on conservative-minded websites. Good thing there's no media bias. /s
There are more details to this case, all revealing Ted Kennedy as one of the most vile characters in American history. His continuous reelection reflects terribly on the State of Massachusetts.
Somehow I think that Teddy’s Creator won’t hesitate to bring up the subject of Mary Jo....as well as *many* other subjects...during the short meeting that He will have for him shorty after his death.
Hello CaptRon,
Isn’t this the p.o.s. Kennedy that got caught paying some clown to take a college exam for him?
And didn’t he drive his old lady to drink?
All OK in N.Y?
You enjoying watching your State Congress? Man and I thought Floriduh politicos were dumbasses.
NO! Purgatory is for souls that are being cleansed before admission to Heaven. Ted Kennedy is probably not headed in such a favorable direction.
I’ve read that book twice. As a Massachusetts resident, I am constantly embarrassed by the political system here, and the Kennedy’s are the pinnacle of that.
Simply disgusting.
Great book.
