Ohio Senator George Voinovich says that the GOP is "being taken over by southerners," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
In an interview with with the paper, Voinovich said shrinking demographics and southern senators are alienating his conservative constituents. He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP's biggest problem.
"We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It's the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're southerners. The party's being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?'," Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich's Ohio.
"We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states," Pawlenty said.
Not stopping at the GOP's biggest problem, Voinovich says President Obama's biggest problem is "two words: Nancy Pelosi."
True. The largest churches in Wichita are Evangelical. All denominations are served as well. This town is very Christian, one of many things it shares with Tulsa.
The only thing fishy about Sarah Palin is that she likes to go fishing. and PETA doesn’t like that
Shes fresh..new..young. And the way they have invaded her life, violated her privacy and searched every single place they could (including her yahoo private email account). we know she is probably the cleanest politician in the history of the United States. We would know by now if she was fishy.
It is amazing because it is politics. With most politicians, if they are clean in one area. they are not clean in the next.
with some politicians it is way too obvious up front. What they have been into. what they are lacking. all of the crap that is spread around from back-room deals. what they are pulling over on us.
and then you figure if you spend enough time up someones behind, you might find some crap. Just ask Barney “ACORN” Frank.
okay.. I got to stop...
It’s about time!
Crybaby Rinos like Voinovich sabotaging good men like John Bolton are an even bigger problem.
There are still a lot of conservatives up North but the liberals have rigged the election game.
Senators Jim Jeffords of Vermont and Arlen Spectre of Pennsylvania, Governor Bloomberg of New York. The problem is not that there are too many Southerners in the Republican party, it is that the Yankees are leaving.
what does errr,errr mean anyway?
I'm a Polish/Italian Yankee (but a Mets fan) agnostic in New York City who thinks that Coburn and DeMint are the only two guys in the Senate with any balls OR ideas. Voino is another "Catholic moderate" a la Peter King (as opposed to Catholic leftists like Kennedy or good Catholic conservatives like Bill Buckley) who thinks he is more "sophisticated" than he actually is.
Do you really think that those Yankees are going to start voting Right, flying Confederate flags, and going to NASCAR events and Megachurches just because they "move south?"
You really need border controls down there. I say this as a Yankee myself. :)
South will rise again! And they are right to do so. Voinozich is a disgrace for Ohio, but we are full of disgraces here,,gee,,we got strickland, the ufo guy, etc, what a bunch of nitwits.Hopefully we will follow the south and find some decent, honest politicians that believe in America as it should be.
It’s the sound my car battery makes when it needs a charge.
This was such an amazingly childish and intolerant remark by Voinivich. Good riddance, I’m glad this turd is leaving the Senate. If only we had more Senators like Coburn and Demint who actually fight for what’s good for the country and who have fought to return sanity to our fiscal policies unlike some in the GOP and the entire Democratic party which care more about buying votes by mortgaging the country and our children’s future than with fostering a robust, sound economy.
The fact is Coburn and Demint were elected by the people of their stated and have as much right to be in the Senate as Voinivich—hell, at least they’ve done something constructive with their tenure in the Senate unlike the invisible “go along to get along” Voinivich who was just there to tickle his enormous ego.
And the South is part of this country whether ole’ George likes it or not, and its citizens have as much right to be in the GOP as he does—perhaps more so since they actually stand for conservative principles rather than just serving their own egos like the tired country club jerk Voinivich.
It would be nice if some of these country club types in all their reaching across the aisle would occassionally reach across the aisle to their own party.
This guys just screaming for attention as he walks out the door.
How did he know? They weren't castrated?
Apologies to our "non-castrati" Northern FReepers...
It wasn’t bragging. It was complaining.
Southeastern Ohio is roughly the same was West Virginia and Kentucky. If it’s not “Southern” then it’s pretty damn close. The problem is that SE Ohio is only about 8-10% of the state’s population, by far the least populated part of the state. The area has very little political sway in statewide races, although it has flipped from time to time. Voted heavily for Reagan and Bush, but also voted for Clinton. Voinovich clearly doesn’t care about offending anyone in that part of the state, he’s done facing the voters. Hopefully, Rob Portman can replace him. He’s a much more reliable Republican and conservative vote.
nope
If only it were true.......the GOP might show more spine.
