Ohio Senator George Voinovich says that the GOP is "being taken over by southerners," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
In an interview with with the paper, Voinovich said shrinking demographics and southern senators are alienating his conservative constituents. He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP's biggest problem.
"We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It's the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're southerners. The party's being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?'," Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich's Ohio.
"We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states," Pawlenty said.
Not stopping at the GOP's biggest problem, Voinovich says President Obama's biggest problem is "two words: Nancy Pelosi."
“He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP’s biggest problem.”
Grunthor wants the rest of the Gutless Old Pantywaists to be MORE like Demint and Coburn!
Let me get this straight. Baby boomers are moving to the south because of weather and taxes and states that have no income tax. Northern states are crying in their beer because they are losing influence. Hummmmmm. Wonder if there is a connection?
Well this Connecticut Yankee says that a damn site better class of folks than the trash that's taken over the democrat party. It's a good thing Harry Truman and Scoop Jackson didn't have to live to see this.
“good northern republicans”
Like Arlen Spectre?
If Voinovich is the only type of Republican we can expect from the North, I’d rather permanently be a minority party.
No. Like Tim Walberg or Rosanna Pulido.
These current map drawings with America in the north are unfair after north=top and top=King right? so we should draw the map with the southern hemisphere on top and then Palin is from the South.
I did see a map with this philosophy behind it a few years ago. It was just plain dumb.
sw
THAT is for DAMN sure!
Thanks for the laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“No.”
Good enough for me. I believe as you appear to that we can have GOP elected in the north and west without those candidates having to be a slightly less commie version of the Democrats.
He says that like it’s a bad thing...
Whether Oklahoma counts as Southern or Midwestern seems to depend on whom you ask--the original settlers (not counting the Indians, many of which had been involuntarily relocated there from elsewhere) were from all the surrounding states as well as from further afield. Lots of Kansans.
Voinovich ought to move to North Carolina. It’s getting hard to find any southerners around here.
“Specter was born in Wichita, which is in the southern part of Kansas.”
Did he grow up there? I got a cousin that was born in Germany, but she hates bratwurst and sauerkraut.
In sore need of term limits.
Don't say that!
We go enough damn Yankees down here already.
Let me fix it:
Attention Yankees, the south sucks, it's hot, rainy and we get hurricanes!
Our woman are ugly, all of us smell bad and we eat terrible completely unpalatable food!
Stay home!
And the dems are taken over by: transvestites, economic illiterates, metrosexuals, mal-do-wells, illegal immigrants, tax evaders, Teddy the swimmer, Barney the Banking Queen, Well-preserverved Pelosi, etc.
I’ll take the southerners any time.
By the way, I’m originally from the south and will match any of the Obamaloon cabinet for accomplishments any time.
I say thank God the Southerners are taking over the GOP. As an Ohioan, I wish someone with some Southern conservative views would take your senate seat, you dagum RINO.
