People Like Palin
Charleston City Paper ^ | 2009-07-28 | Jack Hunter aka Southern Avenger

I’ve never been a big fan of Sarah Palin not because I ever thought she was exceptionally bad but because she never struck me as exceptional, period. By 2008, George W. Bush’s Republican Party had wrecked the Right and that Palin became famous by spending four months parroting the same, discredited agenda for John McCain didn’t exactly make her a credible conservative in my eyes, much less a new champion for the Right. Yet, I understood why grassroots conservatives’ desire for such a hero would lead them to Palin, whose beauty and backwoods charm, made her the perfect symbol for so many frustrated, middle-class Americans to rally around.

I get those same phone calls. I won’t send the GOP another penny. I will send individuals money, if they represent my values.

Duncan Hunter got money. If Palin runs, she will likely get money. Possibly Pat Toomey will get money. The rest will have to do without my help.

Of course she is bright. Her problem is that she does not have the academic credentials to prove it, as Obama does. IAC. she is in my opinion the most affective stump speaker around, but she does not speak the academeese that allows Obama to impress even the conservative media. They ascribe a depth to his speeches that I do not see. What they responding to is less the lyrics than the music. Obama sings arias while Palin belts out songs.

I know a bunch of their leaders personally and I am not missing anything about paleos. They are eccentric characters not at all consistent with the conservative movement of modern times that nominated and elected Reagan. They constantly flirt with questions of ancestry and ethnocentrism. Real conservatives favor a strong military used as regularly as necessary or desirable to destroy the enemies of our nation and our civilization. Unlike Cain, we are often called upon to be our brothers' keeper.

Conservatives are pro-lifers and really mean it. They are not faux "constitutionalist" evasion artists like paleoPaulie. Real conservatives support the institution of the family against attempts by Lance and Bruce to play marital make-believe. Or Lance and Bruce and their dog Gruff. Not even if they include the "family" goldfish and turtle. There are just some places where our toys do not belong.

Globalism is internationalism. Conservatism is interventionism. Wimpy cowardice in matters foreign and military is paleowhateverism.

Real conservatives do not pose for holy pictures as fiscal conservatives while stuffing appropriations bills with massive pork for their districts, while voting against the bills for cosmetic purposes, while more honest thieves pass the bills and the Galveston pork along with their own.

Actual pro-lifers and conservatives do not pose for holy pictures on the one hand, while denying federal jurisdiction over abortion (wink, wink, folks, no worry that the libertoonians will lose their precious "rights" to kill their innocent unborn under SCOTUS and Roe vs. Wade), while nonetheless filing pro-life bills in Congress which will go nowhere just because the paleowhirlingdervish is the sponsor. I would think that you would agree that this is not an issue where such dishonesty and fraud are tolerable.

I did not realize that El Run Paulie had a gang. They certainly were not very visible in last year's primaries, despite the anti-American media's best efforts.

You misunderstand what "paleoconservative" means. Definitions:

1. A phony and a fraud posing as "conservative" i.e. Ron Paul; and

2. Political dead meat.

Oh, and since you brought it up, "neoconservative" means one of a number of octogenarian and nonogenarian mostly NYC intellectuals formerly associated with socialism and a moderately hard left who fled the Demonrat Party and their own leftist views on many things when the soviet Americong seized the Demonrat Party under McGovern, circa 1972. Most are dead now (Sidney Hook and others). Some are still with us: Midge Decter, Norman Podhoretz, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Irving Kristol? and a few more. They are a remarkable group who were willing to defect to our side. They are not notable UN lovers or internationalist anythings. They simply do not stick their heads in the sand hoping that the baaaaad men will just go away. As one of them (Walt Whitman Rostow) said to LBJ in response to the wimpy dreamy nostrum of seeking to reach the "hearts and minds" of the reds in Vietnam: "Grab them by their short hairs and their hearts and minds are sure to follow." Rostow had it right on that score. El Run Paulie, Al Qaeda spokesman in Congress and his paleopals do not get it and probably never will.

I am one conservative who had a bellyful of peacecreep scum thirty some odd years ago and I will not change my mind about them or their successors now or ever.

Unlike Cain, we are often called upon to be our brothers' keeper.

So then, you should have no objection to the bailouts, welfare programs, and other forays of Big Government into American society.

After all, we are just being "our brother's keeper," right? And it's all for "the common good," isn't it?

I have no problem with helping others, but I do have every bit of a problem getting into government and forcing Americans to help others, whether the objects of help are domestic or foreign.

She can have no more gaffs like seeing Russia from Alaska.

Whoa hup there, Mariner!

With the Seward Peninsula of Alaska to the east, and Chukotskiy Poluostrovof Siberia to the west, the Bering Strait separates the United States and the Russian Federation by only 90 kilometers. It is named for Danish explorer Vitus Bering, who spotted the Alaskan mainland in 1741 while leading anexpedition of Russian sailors. This view of the region was captured by MISR's vertical-viewing (nadir) camera on August 18, 2000 during Terra orbit 3562. The boundary between the US and Russia lies between Big and Little Diomede Islands, which are visible in the middle of the Bering Strait. The Artic Circle, at 66.5 degrees north latitude, runs through the Arctic Ocean in the top part of this image.

"Little Diomede Island is located about 25 miles (40 km) west from the mainland, in the middle of the Bering Strait. It is only 0.6 miles (1 km) from the International Date Line and about 2.4 miles (4 km) from the Russian island of Big Diomede. The highest point in Little Diomede Island is 919 feet (280 m). This island has a population of 170 and is the westernmost landmass in the world. Big Diomede Island is the respective counterpart."

(Diomede = 'DYE-o-meed')

The article is from Wiki, and the satellite photo from NASA, of course.

ANY QUESTIONS??

She can have no more gaffs like seeing Russia from Alaska. She needs to demonstrate command of facts and data, if only sparingly. She needs to be able to carry the agenda of liberty and enterprise in debate against the pros and hacks the commies send at her...press included.

What a putz. Have you ever actually read anything she has said? She didn't say you can see Russia from her house, she did say there were parts of Alaska from which you can see Russia, this is a true statement and not a gaff. It was only a gaff when the MSM misquoted her as they have done on many other of her statements.

She already has demonstarted far more knowledge than the average RINO and her stewardship of Alaska was excellent. She accomplished everything she set out to do, everything she allowed herself 4 years to accomplish and she did it in a little over 2 years, she spent less money than any previous governor, cut spending, brought oil and gas revenue to Alaska got the Natural Gas pipe line, something no other governor before her had done, rolling.

People like you just demonstrate your ignorance of Sarah's accomplishments which outweigh most other Governors in the USA. She doesn't need to do "her homework" as others have stated, that is a BS statement.

She is far more competent that either Bozo the WH clown and McCain, the Democrats pick for ass kisser of the year. I'm voting for Sarah, just as she is, regardless of what party she is running in and if she doesn't run I will write her name in. You vote for the RINO of your choice, none of them will ever win a Presidential election again.

I’ve never been to AK,have you? While in the service I was told by another serviceman that when walking guard duty in AK he could see the Russan guards walking their post. This was in the late 50’s.

No, he picked her to bring the Conservative base on board, which up until that point, had abandoned him, and also to try and pick up the seriously pissed off PUMAs from the debris of Hillary's campaign after Obama's goons had wrecked it.

Rabs, thanks for the very good SP_Middleclass vs Elite/proto-Maxist class analysis from “Southern Avenger” Jack Hunter. IMO he hits on a very real class war that has possiblity of becoming open warfare. SP may morph into the type of leader for the Middleclass....

I have been generally of the same opinion on Jack Hunter in the past but have found him making more rational sense after the election of BHO. I think he sees what conservatives see is coming and is trying to raise some flags. A bit o’ libertarianism probably will not kill you.

How was that a "gaff" ..as you can and it a geopolitical reality of a hostile nuclear power 40 miles off it shore while being isolated from the rest of the US for support...no other US Governor deals with any thing like that...the left played on the US populace's ignorance...

Bill Clinton when asked a similar question spoke of his commanding the Arkansas National guard..I know TX can be a little grumpy at times.. but it's not like being out on a limb by yourself with Russia with nuks next door...

AK knows any war they get wacked first and supported by CONUS America last

I fail to see the connection between bailing out AIG, Gummint Motors, Chrysler, and other various corporate incompetents who travel by Gulfstream jets to testify in Washington about the insolvency of their corporations and seeing to it that Israel is not nuked. One holocaust of Jews is more than enough for a century and I am not Jewish. One 9/11 is enough for all time.

Jack Kemp used to say something to the effect of: What you subsidize you get more of. What you penalize you get less of. Is it any wonder that we are in the mess we are in today?

I fail to see the connection between welfare programs and sending rescue workers in the aftermath of tsunamis Southeast Asia or Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana to literally save lives of folks stranded in collapsing or flooded buildings. I hope your grandma does not need to be pulled from her nursing home as the waters rise and you are whining about not wasting money on her and other similarly situated.

I also fail to see how the boogie....err, Big Government is the result of spanking those who were the perps of 9/11 and those who cheer them on and harbor them.

I see a very strong connection between gelding America in such situations and the all purpose loss of American backbone or whatever and other forms of paleoPaulieism.

Randianism is a junkyard philosophy. So is Paulistinianism.
