Gov't plan can coexist with private insurance (CBO caves to Obama and Pelosi)

A new government health insurance plan sought by President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats could coexist with private insurers without driving them out of business, an analysis by nonpartisan budget experts suggests.

The estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office — seen as good news by Democrats — comes as leaders pushed Monday to make progress on health care overhaul before lawmakers go home for their August recess.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says a floor vote is still possible in the next few days, and Democrats called a meeting of all their House members late Monday afternoon. In the Senate, a small group of lawmakers from both parties were resuming negotiations in search of an elusive compromise.

Obama's ambitious timetable for his top domestic priority has slipped as Democratic dissension has slowed the legislative work.

The White House and congressional Democrats were angered two weeks ago when the budget office director, Douglas Elmendorf, told Congress that the House bill lacked mechanisms to bring health care costs under control.

Now, Democrats are using the budget office's suggestion that a government-run insurance plan would not destroy private insurers to rebut one of the main charges against their proposal — that it would lead to a federal takeover of the private health insurance marketplace.

Seems Elmendorf’s Chicago type summons to the White House by Zer0 paid off for Zer0 and the socialists.

The article failed to mention the CBO director’s visit to the White House. That is pertinent information as it brings into question his objectivity.

Yes they fail to mention that little tidbit but we have extremely intelligent FREEPERS that have long term memories. I can’t say didn’t see this little trick coming.

The whole notion that it won’t drive private health care out of business is absurd.
If a company sees that they can save 10%-20% by making their employees go to a government plan they will certainly do it and insurance companies will be driven out of business.

Obamacare’s notice of competition and fairness:

Step 1: Force insurances to join exchanges by telling them they cannot issue new policies unless they join.

Step 2: Appoint a “Health Choices Commissioner” appointed by Obama who puts a limit on profits exchange carriers can make, tells them what type plans they can offer and sets limits on premiums they can charge.

Step 3: Force exchange carriers to return money beyond the profit level and tell them what to approve/deny on claims for procedures that are “proven” and “cost-effective” by the government.

Step 4: Require all carriers to submit every claim to the federal government so that they can be reviewed for fairness and adherence to policy and force exchange carriers to have denials heard and overruled by the federal government.

Step 5: Partially subsidize the government plan with taxes and force the non-government exchange carriers to operate on profit.

Seems like I read somewhere that if you ever go off private and onto the government plan, you will forever after be on the government plan. This would have the effect of shutting down all private plans over a period of not too many years. Does anyone know if this is part of the plans under consideration now?
