"I don't know all the facts," that is where President Obama should have begun and ended his statement about the skirmish between Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and a local Cambridge, Massachusetts police sergeant. But, he couldn't stop himself from saying the police "acted stupidly" and "I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry." Or the next day still defending his statement, saying "I am surprised by the controversy surrounding my statement, because I think it was a pretty straightforward commentary that you probably don't need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man who uses a cane, who's in his own home."
However, by Friday, no matter how "straightforward" his comments were on Thursday, President Obama said that he had been misunderstood: "I think I unfortunately gave an impression that I was maligning the Cambridge Police Department and Sgt. Crowley specifically. And I could've calibrated those words differently."
Obama has offered no apology for his comments on Wednesday and Thursday. In fact, the president still insisted on Friday "that there was an overreaction in pulling Prof. Gates out of his home to the station." He did not back away from any of his inflammatory statements about race being involved in Gates' arrest. Obama's only mention of race put the blame on society: "The fact that this has become such a big issue I think is indicative of the fact that, you know, race is still a troubling aspect of our society." . . . .

An apology from Obama and 5 bucks won’t buy you a paperback book.
We seen that with Bill Clinton when he was wagging his finger against “that woman” and now we see it with Obama calling the NJ cop “stupid”. But in so doing they often get themselves in more trouble.
George W bush only ever laughed and shrugged things off and he never had such trouble.
He should tell the Kenyan to take his Colt 45 Malt Liquor and cram it.
Self-proclaimed Messiahs don’t apologize. They lie, cheat, distort, misrepresent, threaten and rule. But they don’t apologize.
That’s OK. Crowley will still vote for him in 2012.
I hope that Crowley isn’t under the impression that Obama is waiting for him to come to the white house before he apologizes.
If there were ever to be a sincere apology, it would have come already over the very airwaves that the original insult was hurled from.
Obama had multiple chances to deliver that apology.
He chose to excuse himself instead.
And then he joked about it.
I would recommend to Crowley that he accept the invitation AFTER he gets an apology through the media.
Otherwise, he will only be rewarding Obama for his behavior.
As someone else pointed out here earlier - he has no problem apologizing to the world for any slight (real, or imagined) that the United States might have committed over the years - but getting an apology out of him for his own blunders is quite another thing ...
I would not be surprised if Crowley apologizes to Obama.
No apologies needed. He offered a beer instead //sarc//
I guess BHO will now offer a beer to despots worldwide to settle ‘hot spots’ too?
Obama’s Foreign Policy, beer diplomacy.
I think Crowley’s already accepted the invite. “Skip” still says it was racial profiling.
I hope Sgt.Crowley gets some advice from someone who is used to dealing with pompous asses such as Obama and his pompous buddy Gates.Otherwise Sgt. Crowley is going to be used by these two conmen.Once Sgt. Crowley goes to Washington he will be on their turf and the press will only be on Crowley’s side when he praises Obama.
“I think I unfortunately gave an impression that I was maligning the Cambridge Police Department and Sgt. Crowley specifically.”
Gave an impression?! Barry’s comments didn’t give an impression, they gave a conclusion. A condemnation.
WHAT A JERK. Take your flaccid apology and the 40 ouncer and shove it.
Insult me and call me stupid, then hold your breathe until I invite you over for a beer.
and hold your breath at the same time
My advice - get the whole thing on camera...wear a wire...something.
When you come out of the meeting, you may not recollect exactly what the other 2 remember.
He’d better make sure he can smell a roofie in a drink, too. Don’t want a big “we’ve buried the hatchet” group handshake photo on CNN with you wearing Weekend At Bernie’s sunglasses that you didn’t even bring with you.
