Wind more then any thing else determines where the sea ice will be in late spring/summer. If the wind is blowing towards Alaska the ice will pile up on the shores of Alaska. If the wind is blowing away from Alaska the ice will not be piling up on Alaska's shores. Simple as that, all these pictures show is which way the wind was blowing on the day they were taken.
