The Senate on Thursday voted to scuttle money for a second engine powering the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, handing President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates a second victory on Pentagon priorities.
In a voice vote, the Senate struck $438.9 million in funding from the 2010 defense authorization bill for the second engine, which is produced by General Electric and Rolls-Royce.
Senators specifically approved an amendment sponsored by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) that bars spending on an alternative engine until the Defense secretary certifies that such a program would reduce the fighter programs costs, improve the planes readiness and not disrupt development or result in fewer fighters procured.
. . . . .
McCain, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, co-sponsored the amendment to strike the funding with Lieberman. Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) also signed on as co-sponsors.

So wait, not only did he kill the F-22, he’s now trying to kill the F-35? I’m really trying not to drop any massive expletives right now. I really am.
McCain, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, co-sponsored the amendment to strike the funding with Lieberman. McQueeg strikes again! |

He is trying to kill the alternate engine for the F-35; making the entire fleet of F-35s sole sourced to one supplier.
McQueeg is a disgrace. We were hosed either way.
Who is this Gates? What little I’ve read about him recently
doesn’t paint him as a respectable guy.Is he,in fact,just another one of Hussein’s whores?
The Jimmy CarterFication of the military.
Leiberman - (I) Connecticut
GE’s Jet Engine HQ is in Fairfield, Connecticut
</shock>
Gates and McCain are not doing any good for our military. Sounds to me like they are obammy whores. And, yes I do respect Mr McCains service to our country.
In reading this, I was quite surprised. This means that Pratt & Whitney will not just be the prime engine supplier, but the only engine supplier. The cancellation was for a 2nd engine designed for the same plane in a joint effort between GE and Rolls-Royce.
I was surprised, because I thought that GE had “most favored supplier” status in the 0bama administration.
Trillions upon trillions for unions, ACORN, etc, but not a dime for defense! That’s the Obama way.
Well, there is one silver lining to this cloud.
G.E. was thrown out on the new engine. (Don’t know who makes the current one.)
Just another person loyal to the New World Order. Do what’s good for it - especially if it is bad for America.
Oh, and Lieberman’s garage analogy. “Why would you want a second engine in your car when you have a perfectly good one now?” Someone needs to tell him that fighter engines aren’t the same as car engines and the consequences when one doesn’t work right are far different.
Pratt.
Pratt is in Connecticut too.
Nope, not at all. He’s extremely intelligent, even if I disagree with some of his policy decisions. For example, as part of the Iraq Study Group in 2005-6, he was FOR talking with Iran. However, I know he doesn’t trust Iran naiively. He just thought that we might better achieve our strategic goals as a nation if we gave that notion a chance (as it’s turning out, Bush was right not to even bother). But he signed onto that possibly strategy as part of the larger group, he probably didn’t come up with it himself. Secondly, on these large aviation expenditures, his philosophy is quite simple. He wants to fund the defense expenses that actually save lives in Iraq and Afghanistan today, rather than invest all these billions in futuristic or highly advanced weaponry. That’s not to say he doesn’t see the need for those. It’s a matter of priorities at a time we’re dealing with a major ground conflict in two countries.
National Defense: The only federal program that Obama demands be cut with threats of veto’s and overt campaigns.
National Defense: The only federal duty authorized by the constitution.
The P-51N is a cool aircraft, talk to Obama about it and perhaps we can fire up the production again.
Oh wait a minute we need to ream the public for health care first...
