Just 18% of adults think it’s the government’s job to tell Americans what kind of light bulb they use, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Seventy-two percent (72%) say it’s none of the government’s business, and 10% are not sure.
The federal government under an energy bill passed in 2007 is requiring consumers to dump incandescent bulbs, the ones we’ve used for well over a century, for more expensive incandescent ones. The plan is scheduled to go into effect over the next 10 years in the name of great energy efficiency.
Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans and 78% of adults not affiliated with either major political party say it’s not the government’s role to make Americans change their light bulbs. Among Democrats, 58% share that view, but 29% say it is the government’s job.
When asked who would do a better job of providing quality products for consumers, only 23% of Americans say government planners and managers. Fifty-nine percent (59%) have more confidence in companies hoping to make a profit. Nineteen percent (19%) aren’t sure.
Men have more faith in the private sector than women. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of those who work for a private company say businesses motivated by potential profit will do a better job of coming up with quality consumer products. Just 45% of government employees agree.
Seventy-four percent (74%) of Republicans and 67% of unaffiliateds give the edge to private companies, while Democrats are almost evenly divided over which would do a better job.

I bought a few packs of the funny mercury bulbs. After a few months they dim and dim some more. They are harder to read by because of the spectra and the flicker.
Overall sounds like the hoaxers are losing ground.

Hell, most American have long accepted the new government-mandated mini-shitters that take 3 flushes to work. What’s a new light bulb after they’ve already fooled with your household throne?
And we want our toilets back also.
Its not the government’s job to tell me anything.
Now if they ask nicely and use the magic word, maybe.
I agree about the light bulbs, however, how much rage will erupt, when the government decides if Americans can live or die as dictated by Congressional policy?? Call Pelosi and give her a dose of your thoughts on that subject.

Which one actually gives the same spectrum of light as a real lightbulb? And turns all the way on the instant electricity gets to it? Those are my two primary reason for hating the CFLs the wife bought, slow start and lack of saturation.

Go to the big box store, and buy the tallest fill tube assembly you can find. I upped the tank level by about 30% by doing this.
There is one flipside to fluorescent light bulbs:
They last a lot longer and use less energy than their incandescent counterparts.
I recently stayed in a place where they had these horrible bulbs in the fixtures over the mirror in the bathroom. Did not notice them until day two of my stay, Came back from the beach, and as I was looking in the mirror, I thought, Oh my heavens what is wrong with me? I was a beautiful shade of yellow..just like I had jaundice. Needless to say I was upset until I went out on the balcony and realized that I was not yellow. Went back to the bathroom and found those stupid bulbs in the fixtures. I have been buying up the old bulbs I refuse to use the mercury laden ones.
I wonder how many congress critters are invested deeply in those new light bulbs?
I am from the government and am here to help you....I want my old toilet back also, along with the old shower.
If it pisses of an enviro-wacko and doesn't cost too much money, I'm up for it.
When they give unsatisfactory performance lasting longer actually makes them worse since that means you’re stuck with them longer. And they haven’t impacted the electricity bill in a useful way either. By and large CFLs just plain suck. The cost more to buy, don’t impact the electric bill nearly as much as promised, and give sub-standard light.
I am waiting for the trial lawyers to begin a class action lawsuit against the MANUFACTURERS of these bulbs for the toxic effects of the mercury contained in them contending that the manufacturers knowingly made them with this toxic substance. Of course the Congress that mandated using them will not be named in the suit.
