The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on racial profiling.
Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.
"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The course, called "Racial Profiling," teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community "and how you don't want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from," Fleming said.
Obama has said the Cambridge officers "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates last week when they responded to his house after a woman reported a suspected break-in.
Crowley, 42, has maintained he did nothing wrong and has refused to apologize, as Gates has demanded.
Crowley responded to Gates' home near Harvard University last week to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded Gates show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused, flew into a rage and accused the officer of racism.
Gates was charged with disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped Tuesday.

Also, I have read reports that Gate's has stated he had to force the door open because it was broken from an earlier break-in attempt.
Also, as a man who celebrates his "blackness", as Gates does (and makes a living at), I find it curious that he's married to a white woman - not that there's anything wrong with that - but, I think it's an interesting look into the man's psyche.

I guess Gates didn’t know who he was messing with. That’s the problem with viewing people as a race rather than as a person. You can wind up making all sorts of wrong assumptions about them.

True.. I noticed when Obama started playing the race card during the campaign.. his popularity grew.
officer discretion- I wouldn’t arrest a well-connected ,friend of well-known race pimps for yelling at me and making an ass of himself , but that’s just me.

The arresting officer was hand-picked by the black police commissioner to teach a course on racial sensitivity at the police academy. It's more vindication for the cop.
Hey Professor Gates- use your brains next time. Simply say- “good evening officers and I’m glad you are out doing your job tonight. I feel so much safer now. Oh, I’m the owner of this home and here is my ID to prove it.”
Absolutely! It could have been handled very simply, but Gates seemed to want the conflict. The police should be applauded for doing their job to protect the community.
I hope the cop sues Gates for defamation - of course in the “People’s Republic of Massachusetts” the fact that the cop is white will be accepted as irrefutable proof that he’s a racist.
Apparently, unlike what Obama and Sharpton would want you to think, this doesn’t just happen to black men in America. I found this after searching for just a couple of minutes, along with another link to a video that showed Shawn Manrose is a white male. I bet you could find dozens of these if you looked...

Looks like 0bama and his ilk picked the wrong person to throw their typical “racism” accusations at.
Quite honestly, I think people like 0bama and Gates are racists, and it bothers me. I remember during the campaign the only person who ever brought up race during the campaign was 0bama (aside the media gushing over the color of his skin of course).
