To make anything stick, they would have to show that a benefit inured to the donor as a result of the donation.

The fact that she is/was the Governor is not enough to show inappropriate conduct.

If they want to complain that as gov, she should not have accepted the donations, her defense is that her status as governor made her the target in the first place. The fact that she is/was the Governor is what triggered the initial unfounded ethics complaints. They can't say, we get to take all these free shots at you because you are governor, but that status also forbids you from accepting any help to defend yourself.

If any public official is expected to personally finance every ethics probe legal defense, you have just provided the opposition, liberal or conservative, a way to hound any public official out of office.

The law is expected to be blind.... but not stupid.

SNIP

The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters.

An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the "official" legal defense fund. [end snip]

Caused by numerous bogus ethical complaints? Why not?

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m shocked. It was clear, long ago, that some sort of trumped up charge would be pegged on her. What a bunch of bull.

Actually, these are the only words you need to see in this story:

The AssPress is bad enough. Throw in a D’uh!ro byline and you’re walking a fine line between fantasy land and real life.

Heck didn’t Obama come up with the phrase “spread the wealth around” well that is what we were all doing, spreading our wealth and helping out a fellow Conservative.

“An investigator for the state Personnel Board”

No name. My guess is that this story exists for the express purpose of getting the headline out on AP. By tomorrow, we’ll know who the “independent” investigator is, he’ll turn out to be a moonbat a-hole and it’ll all be over, as if the notion that any legal defense fund — especially for Palin — is personal gain is not laughable on its face.

The investigator must be a real piece of work to have AP not mention his name.

Not capped? There is a limit of $150.00 dollars. I remember BO talking with someone BEFORE this that said there was usually a 1000 dollar limit, and it would take 500 people and he would donate to it.
It is capped.

1. Who the hell is the investigator?
2. May have.....that's not good enough
This isn't even charges, let alone convictions. We are still innocent till proven guilty in this country.

I’m not sure exactly what WE can do to defend her against this political and legal filth, except to contribute $$$.

let’s see, her legal debts were caused by dimwits bringing useless lawsuits against her, so now she is found wanting because of the debts from defending complaints that have all been found to be groundless. Yeah, democrats are all frickin’ brain dead. If we allow these a**hats to run our country one more day we are all complicit in the destruction of America.

She said in the twitter that it was an ethics violation in itself that the investigator leaked this to the media before they, the Palins, were notified of the charge.

And how is B. Hussein Obama paying legal fees to keep his original birth certificate hidden? He’s in no way that wealthy!

Exactly, you can donate up to 150 bucks. Conservatives4Palin had a webathon a few weeks ago raising money for the defense fund, about 110,000 was raised. I gave 25 bucks. It is capped. It’s not like people were donating 5 grand, 150 buck limit. I knew this would happen, I even told my friend last night “You just watch, they will file something against Sarah before she gets out of office, as a bon voyage gift”
