Broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite has died at age 92, The New York Times reports.

I hate to break it to you but Jesus just told me that you don’t speak for Him anymore than Walter Cronkite did.
I saw him once in person in Edgertown. He was rowing his hard-bottom dingy back to his sailing yacht anchored in the harbor. He was alone.
I have always thought better of him because he was a sailing yachtsman [as am I]. Otherwise, he didn’t have a clue. I’ll never forget Wally Sherrah having to explain to Walter on national television why space men cannot talk in space without a radio. Duh!
I saw Walter’s yacht last year in Oxford MD tied up and clearly not in use. The boat was big enough to require professional captain and crew, but it was obvious that no one was using it last summer.
Cheers to Walter, may he forever sail the seven seas.
And if they shared his beliefs, then their grief now must be horrible :(

I will say this. Cronkite was a strong and thorough reporter. Of course, he was a lefty and as he aged he became more partisan, but his anchoring the news desk was far less biased than many of today’s MSM. And he was definitely pro-American in his coverage unlike many today.
Back in college, our three network TV stations managed to schedule their network newscasts at different times. As a journalism student, it was fascinating to watch the ABC News at 5 p.m., the NBC News at 5:30 p.m. and the CBS News at 6 p.m. What was amazing was not how different they were, but how similar they were. Almost every night, they all led with the same stories.
But one day, they each led with a different story and it was illustrative of their approach to news coverage. ABC led with a mass shooting in San Diego that was a big local story with eye-catching video but was, ultimately, an isolated crime. NBC led with President Carter leaving for Camp David - a photo op that at least provided some video and some national significance but not truly important news. CBS, with Cronkite, led with a story about economic indicators in decline. There was no video - just over the shoulder graphics.
The point being that Cronkite led with the story that had the greatest impact to his viewers and the country despite the bland presentation and lack of video. ABC led with the “fuzz and was” which was full of video but not a major story. NBC split the difference and showed a story with some video but not particularly important.
That illustrated what Cronkite believed his job was on the CBS Evening News. He wanted to lead with the story that had the most impact to the largest audience, even if it was a rather dry story.
Once he left the anchor desk, his pronouncements became more and more radical but, fortunately, he didn’t seek the spotlight very much either. Compare that with Rather and Couric that have followed in his footsteps.
Wonder if Severeid said anything about Tet. That was supposed to be *his* job, right?

And you all here know what I mean.
Guess I remember his Vetnam reports and attack on Nixon even before much was brought to light. We didn’t watch him for regular news in our house..H & B fans....
He was so trusted that IMO he became more powerful than Johnson, Nixon etc....Not a good thing to have the media more powerful than the president.
That’s our Walter Crankcase alright.
